You have to enable the live view from the menu. then press the set button on the center of the arrow keys.
when shooting with the live view on, auto focus will not work if you press the shutter button halfway, you should press the button marked '*' to make the auto focus work. the small rectangle on the lcd monitor will turn green when correct focus is achieved.

I have the same problem with my camera. I had it for about a year and it worked perfectly until one day where it just stopped working.
I can still turn on the camera, view pictures, and even see the screen info, but otherwise the screen is totally black.
Not only this, but it only takes pictures based on what is shown on the screen, so the pictures come out black too.
When I called the company they sounded like they had never heard of this problem, EVER. I was so diaaspointed because I really loved the camera and I haven't found one since that takes as high quality pictures (even the next model up takes blurry photos without flash).
Anyways, I'll look around for some more answers but I just wanted to tell you, you aren't alone :)
Good luck!
I don't get it!
I have just a minute ago posted your exact words on this link:

In regards to a similar situation with a blank screen.
The difference is that your SOLUTION was actually what I was complaining about.
I am not sure but I think that the complaint here is not that pammaybury wants to see live view and is complaining about only seeing through the sensors interpretation. I think she/he is trying to say that it is completely blank... like in my case.
If it is such... we are on the same boat. Because as much as you can use everything on the camera; including the live view; you are not able to display the subject until you have taken a photograph.
I might be wrong (wouldn't be the first)... if such my apologies.

(Sorry no solutions from me :( )
