Try using f11 on startup, this will start HP Recovery Manager.
If you have recovery disks you can also restore system by restarting the laptop with recovery cd inside.
Otherwise use HP recovery manager pressing F11 on startup.
Ifyou do not have recovery cd and recovery manager does not work, youwill need a replacement recovery cd from HP or a generic Windows setupdisk.

Restore to factory condition

Launch the HP recovery application that should be installed on your computer. Then select the factory reset option. This will boot the computer into a small partition that will allow the computer to reformat and restore back to factory standards. Please note that selecting this will delete all data on your machine. I bought a used laptop,a dv4000, and would like to know how to restore back to out-of-box factory settings

Hi and Welcome to fixya!

In order to reset your machine to the factory settings, just follow these steps:

Access the HP Backup and Recovery Manager

1. Turn on the computer and hold down the "F11" key once the BIOS prompts appear on the monitor.

2. Click on the button labeled "Advanced Options" in the Welcome Screen once the Recover Manager opens. Choose the "System Recovery" option and click "Next."

3. If the "Microsoft System Restore" window appears, select "No" and click "Next."

4. The Recovery Manager will then prompt you to back up any important files as the restoration process will delete all data on the computer's hard drive. If you wish to perform a backup first, select "Back up your files first," click "Next" and follow the on-screen instructions. If not, choose the "Recover without backing up your files" and click the "Next" button. The computer will then begin the restoration process and restore the HP DV4000 to its original factory settings.

Hope this helps!

I want to reset my hp mini 1000 i want to reset it like when i first bought it can you please tell me how to do that step by step thank you.

There are a couple ways to do this. When you bought the laptop you should have gotten a system restoration disk with it. To use this simply put it in the CD drive and it should autorun with simple instructions on how to restore your HP notebook to factory settings. The easiest way to do this is with HP recovery. For a full system restoration, press the F11 key during bootup and then select "Recover PC" from the menu. This is the simplest way to recover your computer, however it will not work if your computer is unable to start up. Note that this will not work if your computer is unable to boot, or if some of the files needed for the recovery are corrupted, which is why you may need the disk.
If your computer simply isn't running like it used to be due to something you recently installed, you could just try a system restore instead of a full restore. Go to your search bar in Windows Vista or 7 and type in "rstrui." This should bring you to the system restore file called rstrui.exe. Click on this and choose the earliest date possible. Note that you may have to check the box in the lower left that says "Show me more restore points," and that this will only work if your computer is set to create restore points often.

How to restore HP Mini 5103 to factory settings?

Restoring the HP Mini to its original factory settings:

1. Click the "Start" icon in the lower-left corner of your HP Mini Windows 7 home screen. Click "All Programs" and then click "Recovery Manager."
2. Click "Recovery Manager" again to open the HP Recovery Manager program.
3. Click "System Recovery" from the list of options beneath the "I need help immediately" section on the left side of the program. The HP Mini will automatically restart and open the HP Recovery Manager.
4. Click "System Restore," and then click "Next." Click "No" if a message pops up on your screen asking if you want to use Microsoft System Restore.
5. Select "Recover without backing up your files," and then click "Next." The restoration process could take between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on the size of your hard drive and how much information you have stored on it. The HP Mini will restart when the laptop has been restored to its original factory settings, and you will be prompted to set up Windows.

There is a System Restore folder under Programs. Select the System Restore and under Advanced options select Factory Default settings. This will reset it to day 1. Keep in mind you will lose all your documents and pictures. Make sure these are backed up. Good luck. -Ravi Shanghavi, Ottawa
