Using Disk 1 of 2 of the Toshiba Recovery and Applications/Drivers for Satellite P200/P205 Series, Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, while the system is preparing for recovery of factory default software, a Copy File dialogue box pops up indicating:

Can't read from the source file or disk.

    PREINST3.SWM
    Type: SWM File
    Size: 624 MB
    Date Modified: 3/1/2007 2:30 AM

Unable to proceed past this point by clicking on Try Again button. The disc surface is flawless, as the jewel case was still factory sealed.

I had the similar problem (Can't read from the source) and faced it a lot of times. I often solve this type of problems using "Long Path Tool". It helped me in solving this error and all related errors. I hope you will also love it.

The work around for this is to take the Toshiba restore disk and do a dvd copy disk to disk and use the copies to restore the computer. I had the same problem and the disk would not read correctly. I called Toshiba and they were no help. I saw a post on another web log and they suggested copying the origianl restore disks. They copies ran without a problem.

I attempted to burn a copy of disc 1 using another Toshiba laptop and encountered the same error message, at which point I decided to try a CD burner on another desktop computer.

Once the copy was completed and verified, I substituted this copy for the original in the Toshiba Satellite that I was restoring, which still had the error message dialogue displayed. I clicked on Try Again button and the restoration process completed without any additional errors.

Am getting 1721 errors on my computer, can you tell me how i can fix it ?

Here you go. This is long winded but should fix you up.
Error 1721 is a common problem for many different Windows systems, shown when the installation you're trying to perform develops a problem and needs to be fixed. If you have this error, it's recommended that you're able to first fix any problems that could be inside your Windows system, and then cure the specific issues that the Windows Installer program has on your PC. This tutorial is going to show you exactly how to do that...
This error will typically show like this:

  • Error 1721. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personal or package vendor.

The problem with this error is actually caused by a very simple issue - the Windows Installer program that is used to install the various files & software onto your PC is actually damaged or corrupted & preventing your system from installing the program you want. This can be caused by a number of problems, including everything from having corrupt registry settings to the Installer program on your system being damaged. To fix this, you first need to make sure that Windows Installer is okay, and then get rid of any further system errors on your computer.
The first step to resolving this error is to "register" and "unregister" the Windows Installer on your system. This is a program which installs all the programs that you want onto your PC, and is constant on every Windows installation. The problem that often causes error 1721 is the way in which Windows often cannot read the Windows Installer program, because it's not "registered". Registering a program basically tells Windows where to look for it on your system, and it's often the case that this stored reference is either damaged or deleted by accident. To ensure this is not a problem, you need to be able to type the following into your system:

  • Load up "CMD" (click "Start" > Run > type cmd)
  • Type msiexec u/unregister
  • Type msiexec /register
  • Try reinstaling the program you wanted to

If you try this and find it does not work, then it's recommended you then use a program by Microsoft called the "Windows Installer Cleanup Utility". This is a new program which basically cleans up all the settings and options associated with the Windows Installer program; meaning that if you have any problems with the Windows Installer on your PC, they should be fixed. You may also wish to install Windows Installer 4.5, which will basically upgrade the Windows Installer program on your system, which should resolve many cases of the 1721 error.
It's also highly recommended that you use a "registry cleaner" to fix any of the errors that are on your Windows system. A registry cleaner is a type of software tool that basically scans through the registry database of your PC and fixes any of the problems that are inside it. The registry database contains all the settings, files and options for Windows, and is where everything from your most recent emails to your desktop wallpaper are kept. It's basically like a library for your system which is continually being used to help your software run correctly. Unfortunately, the registry is continually being damaged & corrupted, leading it to become highly ineffective and erroneous. To ensure this problem is not causing the 1721 error, you should clean through your system with a registry cleaner tool.

Cant install windows vista getting error message in installation

The only thing I can think of for an error of this kind would be faulty media. I would suggest getting ahold of another copy of the Windows Vista Install disc. Note that it matters not what Version the Install disc is, you have the Windows Key you need to use, it will install the correct version on its own.
