Not Freezing/Cooling - A Red Glow... (by 2 users)

posted by doodaaproduc on Jul 07, 2008

My wife and I just got home to find water on the floor in front of our refrigerator. We opened up the freezer door, and heard the sound of water dripping and sizzling. I saw a reddish orange glow coming from below the back panel of the freezer, and noticed some coils or something behind the panel glowing fire red. Most of the stuff inside the freezer was defrosted, and there was melting ice dripping everywhere. The refrigerator side was not cooling, either. I unplugged the power cord, and we emptied all of our contents to the fridge and upright deep freeze in our garage. So now we don't know what to do...

We lost electrical power to our house, on the fourth day we emptied the deep freezer. We propped the door open and unplugged cord. Three weeks later after a good cleaning, we plugged back in and red light came on but the freezer will not get cold. Condenser is pretty warm to the touch and you can hear a slight hum.

also under durland there he is right
if it were me i would check the obvious under the fridge first like a rodent had gotten in and chewed your wires threw in which moister effected the fridge to heat out you could also have bad power unit

also has this unit been on its side this would lead to freon clog and make an over load in fridge if you try and start it after its been fixed or moved
when you move a fridge move upright and if you have to move on its side let set for 48 hours before using fridge freon can clog and cause a back up and this is where you get the glowing from over heating cause of the clog

  • the defrost timer and bimetal thermostat have apparently both malfunctioned. (rare)
  • if someone has worked on it in the past they may have bypassed the  bimetal thermostat.
  •  the bimetal thermostat turns off the heater if it gets too hot (above 45 in the freezer)
  • and the defrost timer is only supposed to stay in defrost for 8 minutes or so.
  • so considering the heater was on and it was hot in the freezer is evidence of these two components not doing their job.
