This is a common problem with the Nuvi series. The on/off switch is a surface mount switch that is mounted vertically off of the main PC board.

The problem is, that there is no support behind the switch, so when you press down the button, the solder leads of the switch are stressed and eventually break off the main PC board. This is a design flaw and could have been easily prevented by wedging a small piece of plastic between the rear of the switch and the SD card housing to give the switch support.

Also, the solder pads for the mechanical connections of the switch could have been made bigger, allowing for more surface area and more solder application.

I have repaired many of these before and the repairs I make prevent this from happening again.

If you would like for me to reasonably repair your GPS, please email me at KS3R at sharc dot net.

Nuvi will not turn on

What model Garmin Nuvi ???....
On occasion, your Garmin GPS may experience technical malfunctions, including failing to power up.
When this happens, perform a manual hard reset of the unit.
A soft reset entails holding the power button until the unit powers down, and then pressing the it again to power the device back up.
However, when the unit won't turn on, a soft reset won't work. In this case, a hard reset is the only way to get the device up and running again.

Unplug power and USB cables to disconnect all sources of power to the unit.
Place your thumbnail into the groove located below the Garmin logo on the face of the unit.

Pry the faceplate off using gentle pressure.
Press the reset button and hold for approximately 3 seconds.
When the device is facing you, the reset button is located in the middle of the right-hand side of the front of the device.

Snap the faceplate back into place.
Press the power button.
Your GPS should now turn back on.

Garmin Nuvi With No Power
A Garmin Nuvi is a type of GPS device that can help you find your way around when traveling by motor vehicle.
You can mount the Garmin Nuvi inside the windshield of your vehicle and allow it to acquire the satellite signal.
This tells the device where you're located.
After that, you can find simple directions to get to a new location by entering the address into your Garmin Nuvi.
If you find that your Garmin Nuvi has limited or no power, you will need to do some troubleshooting to get it to work.

Change the fuse within your unit's power cable.
If your Garmin Nuvi has no power, the fuse may be out, meaning the device cannot be charged.
Plug your Garmin Nuvi into the power supply of your vehicle and turn the vehicle on.
The device cannot charge and get power unless the vehicle is running.

Allow the Garmin Nuvi to charge fully.
You might be unplugging it from the power source too soon, which could cause the device to have little or no power.

Regulate the temperature of your Garmin Nuvi.
It may not function properly if the temperature is too cold, below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, or too hot, above 113 degrees Fahrenheit.

When I turn my Garmin Nuvi 680 on, and the first screen appears about not driving while operating the Garmin, I have to hit "agree" button several times before it goes to main menu, and from that...

Hello,

Try performing a soft reset.
Disconnect the unit from any external power supply.
Depress the reset button behind the flip up antenna.
Reconnect the unit to the power supply and let it should work normally.

If the soft reset does not work, try performing a hard reset.
Caution: Performing a hard reset will erase all user information including favorites and bookmarks and restore the unit back to factory settings. Be sure to save any information before performing the hard reset.
With the unit off, press and hold the lower right hand corner of the screen while turning the power on until a pop-up appears. Press "Yes" to restore the unit back to factory settings.

Garmin turns off when Garmin screen comes on

Hello,

Try performing a soft reset on the unit.
Resetting Your nüvi
If your unit stops responding, turn off the unit, and then turn it back on. If this does not help, perform a reset using the reset button on the bottom of the unit.
Caution: Do not reset your nüvi with a ballpoint pen or other sharp object, which can damage your unit.
1. Disconnect the nüvi from external power.
2. Press the Reset button on the bottom of the nüvi.
3. Connect the nüvi to a power source.

A hard reset can also be done but will erase all the user data.
This is done by with the unit off and pressing and holding the bottom right hand corner of the screen while turning the unit on.

You could also try running the Garmin WebUpdater.
Download and Install WebUpdater.

When I turn on my nuvi 200 it says press dot. When I press the dot it just moves around the screen to different location.

To calibrate the touchscreen on your nuvi 200 series follow the steps below:
  1. Have the unit turned OFF and unplugged from power.

  3. A message will display on the screen: Press Dot.
  4. Once this message displays, release the Power button.
  5. Press in the center of the Dot.
  6. Keep pressing in the center of the Dot as it moves around the screen.
  7. Once this is complete, there will be a message: Calibration Complete.
  8. Touch Ok and the unit will restart.

try the reset button/switch:
Magellan Maestro models - the location of reset button is on the left, right, or bottom side inside a small hole. Use an object to apply pressure to depress the reset button. Also try holding the power button down for up to 10 seconds to power the unit off and again holding the power button down for up to 10 seconds to power the unit on.

If the unit continues to freeze, update to the latest firmware update
. Firmware updates are located on Magellan's support page. On Magellan's support page select your product family, model, and then press the submit button. Firmware updates are located in the updates/upgrade section

No power to my ICN 520

Have you tried the reset hole? make sure there is nothing stuck in there that could be pressing on the button. When you press and hold the reset button the screen stays blank.

If you press the reset button does the unit turn on? Mine turns on when I press the reset button even after I turn the battery off then back on.

Hope this suggestion might help you restore functionality.
