Question about Kenmore 24032\24036 Top Load Washer

Kenmore 70 won't spin, does everything else

My 70 agitates and drains just fine, but will not spin. After some inspection, the metal donut just under the drum rotates during spin cycle. But there is no linkage to drum above. Any ideas?

Dude, after looking at that awesome graphic, this was the part I identified as the culprit. Will order this right away!!! :) So how hard is it to replace? I'm fairly handy with cars, haven't dealt with washers yet.

Ok, got through it easy, but here's the thing....the plastic part isn't broken :( But the bolts were not real tight on the transmission. Would that cause the problem? After inspection, coupling looks good too and transmision seems to be turning properly, drive shaft too.

  • there is a plastic part that releases the break when spinning. this part has broken.
  •  this whole kit in the picture sells for $35.00 and includes this piece.
  • the clutch needs to be replaced too so this kit is all you need.

    it is easy,

    • take the case off (2 clips under control panel)

    • take out the agitator (one bolt in the middle 7/16")

    • lay the machine on its back (use one hand to support the back panel so it doesnt fip back and disconnect stuff)

    • take off the water pump (2 metal clips, leave water hoses connected, just use something to hold it out of your way)

    • take the motor off (2 bigger metal clips with 1/4" support screws, throw these away)

    • take off transmission (three 1/2" bolts underneath, when you pull the trans out make sure the washer stays on the shaft)

    • now you will see the broken plastic part and the clutch

none of this will make sense until you start doing it.
i left out small details since they will be obvious when you see it.
i would change the coupling while your in there

let me know if you get stuck

    • if the bolts in the transmission are too loose, then the plastic piece may not disengage the break (rare).

    •  can you turn the plastic piece  and spin the tub? you should be able to do it with your hand, turn it (i think counter clock wise) and you will feel the break disengage and the tub should spin freely.

    • check that plastic piece good because its just a small tabs that breaks off usually.

Kenmore Heavy Duty Series 70 washing machine gets stuck in cycle.

Either your timing motor has broken or the gears that it drives are stripped. The timing motor is easy to replace but if the gears are stripped you will need a whole new dial assembly.

Sounds more like a transmission or a spin tube problem

Kenmore series 70 washer will only fill with water.

I recently had this problem. It was found that the main drive belt broke and the washer would fill but not spin, agitate or drain. I replaced the belt and everything worked again. A defective or disconnected cover switch would also cause the same problem.

Wont agitate, drains and spins though.

Try these out:
  1. Test the lid switch
  2. Inspect the motor coupler
  3. Inspect the drive belt (belt drive only)
  4. Inspect under the washer for soot (clutch)
  5. Test the motor
  6. Inspect the pulley
  7. Test the transmission
  8. Inspect the agitator
  9. Inspect the pump coupling
  10. Test the water level switch

Kenmore 70 series 110 washer won't drain or spin, but agitates

You have a broken lid switch. Check to see if the switch is broken off of the two screws that hold it under the lid. If it is, get a new one, take off the case and replace old switch with the new one.

Kenmore Series 70 Washing Machine - won't drain water

look at the bottom of the control panel on the end caps and back out the two screws then pull the control panel slightly forward and tilt it back then you should see gray wires either going in the body of the washer or to a switch on the left side un plug the harness and put a jumper wire across the connector going to the control panel then try spin
