I have a haywood h series h 400 pool heater. Each night the the pool pump timer runs b/t 12-7am.. The heater was working fine. and pool temp is around 70-80.. However, lately the heater which is on when the the timer kicks in has not been firing up. I dont have an orginal manual for the heater. Does the heater not turn on once the pool water reaches a certain temperture. You cant really read the temp adjuster on the heater for there are no numbers. Or should the heater run no matter what temp the water gets too?

Allheaters run off of a thermostat just like the heat to your house. It will shut off once heated to the selected temperature. Turn up the temperature, and monitor it for a couple days.

If your heater is operating properly, it will not heat if your pump is not running. But you can connect it to your timer also. How you do it will depend on what type of time you have, Which model of heater you have. If you have your manual, you can find wiring examples for your heater.
Long story but bingo just at the end. The thermistor is generaly the problem with what you describe. it is an inexpensive part and easy to replace. You will not generaly find this in your book. Your E5 code is just because the unit hasn't started yet. Good luck.
What state do you live in, what is the brand name and model number of the heater. If you live in a state that gets cold during the winter, call you local pool store and schedule a closing. If the pump is running and water is not circulating, most likely the pump lost prime or your filter needs to be backwashed, or there is some debris in the impeller.
