I read the compressor with a multimeter and had resistance between the common & run windings & the common & start windings.

  • susan ferrell Jul 07, 2008

I am not satisfied that the compressor is bad. The refer is not completely "dead". The fan runs & the light comes on. I do not know how to check the circuit board or electronic thermostat. Can you give me more info. It no longer cools.

Does anyone know how to check the circuit board & thermostat?

You need a basic understanding first.....all the cold is made in the freezer, then a fan, circulates the cold into the refrigerator. If there was NO cooling in the freezer, and the compressor was running, then I would blame the compressor. However if there was cooling but just partial, then there may be failures with either the fan that cools the compressor, or the fan in the freezer that carries the cold into the refrigerator section, or with the defrost components that may cause a similar problem..ie: frost building up in the freezer and blocking air flow into the refrigerator. As you can see there may be one or more issues....one more I just thought of....the defrost control is on a circuit board, and it sends power to the compressor when it is done defrosting, that control may be bad.
Many repair companies will not work on LG as they can be a bit difficult....you may want to only have LG factory trained servicers.

Hi,

Based on your posting/description, it would seem that the starting capacitor of the compressor is defective. This assumption is considering that the motor checks out not to be shorted, is drawing powere but not turning. This could all point to the failure of the capacitor to provide the initial kick to start the compressor motor.

Of course, it is also possible for the compressor to go bad but often it would be the capacitor.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

f the refrigerator isn't cool, you need to answer some questions, then see if the compressor is running.

    First, answer these questions:

    • Is the refrigerator completely dead? If so, see “It's stopped completely.”

    • Is the thermostat knob turned to the proper setting? If not, reset it.

Next, see if the compressor motor is running

    The
compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts. It's
on the outside of the refrigerator at the back near the bottom. If it
is humming or making a continuous noise and your refrigerator is still
not cooling, there may be a more serious problem with one or more of
several different components, we recommend contacting a qualified
appliance repair technician for further help.

If the compressor is not running but you do have power to the refrigerator, there may be a problem with one or more of these:

    • The compressor

    • The Thermostat

    • The overload, relay, or capacitor

    • The defrost timer

    • The condenser fan motor

    The refrigerator never cycles offThe
thermostat cycles the refrigerator on and off. The refrigerator
normally runs as long as the temperature inside the refrigerator is
higher than the set temperature. If the temperature inside the
refrigerator is cold enough and the thermostat still does not cycle
off, the thermostat may be defective. If so, you need to replace it,
because it cannot be repaired. If the thermostat is not defective, you
may have a problem with the sealed (refrigerant) system, in which case
you should contact a qualified appliance repair technician.

Hi, do you mean the signal to stop cooling is faulty?
I guess the thermostat is faulty. Its the one which detects the temperature and send signals to the circuit.

Well, your answer would seem to be simple...but in truth it could be many a issue. Just because the light is on does't mean anybodys home. Basic, (a) the cold control (dial in fresh food section that usually shows the word "off" at the warmest point on the dial) try turning it up to its coldest. Sometimes it might not reset after it turns off when it senses its cold. Also try tapping in the area of the control. If the freezer fan is not operating this or the defrost control could be the issue. (b) The defrost timer (mechanical or electronic) might have fail to advance out of defrost. Advanced items, (a) The compressor and or compressor relay and overload might be bad. (b) The evaporator fan is not operating (controled by the cold control circuit). (c) the condenser fan failed, which will cause the compressor to fail or shut down due to overheating. (the condenser fan is controled through the compressor circuit. These advanced items would need a multimeter and a understanding of circuit diagrams.

No cooling or compressor operation

Compressor and evap fan cycling are controlled by a circuit board as well as the defrost. It is all in serie - once your defrost kicks in contact is cut from the evap fan and compressor - once defrost is finished the switch reverts back to normal operation and your evap fan & compressor turns on.

Most common causes of this issue is either a defrost timer fault or control board (burnt resistor or bad board).

Inspecting and changing the control board will usually fix the issue - if your evap fan comes on after changing the board but not the compressor then you have a bad compressor.

If you have one of those units like some whirlpool/Kenmore/Inglis that have electronic controls in the refrigerator section, this is the board that controls the thermostat and compressor on/off cycling. The board behind your freezer is also connected to the board in your fridge, this one controls the defrost.
