It will not add preformance, but you will be able to have more stuff on your computer. If you want temporary memory (which lets you run more things at the same time) then you want to get RAM. There are 3 slots on the inside of your computer. Only 1 or 2 are being used when you buy it. These are RAM slots. Shove the RAM into there and click it in and youre done! if you want more actualy memory then you will have to buy a new hard drive. These are fairly easy to install, they look like rectangular metal things. Un plug the one in your computer and plug this one in. Note that this is where all of your data is stored, and you will have to re-install absolutely EVERYTHING. You wont have to install any programs to use RAM or new Hard Drives.

Computer is slow how can i speed it up

There are a number of things you can do but some of these depend on what your computer is and whether it can be upgraded.

1. Add more memory if possible - this will help in most cases. Use the System Scanner on the Crucial memory web site to help you understand what memory can be added to your system.

2. Clean up your hard disk using a tool such as CCleaner to delete lots of unneeded temporary files, internet cache etc.

3. Reduce the number of programs that start up with Windows - you can again use CCleaner to do this - open the Tools section then click on Startup to see a list of what is being started each time you start Windows - there are normally a lot of extras that can safely be 'disabled' and which will speed up the system startup.
4. Defragment your hard disk (after doing the clean up above) so that you make your files more contiguous rather than being scattered all around the disk in fragments. Use one of the free third-party tools to do this such as Iobit's Smart Defrag or Piriform's Defraggler - you can also use the default defragment tool in Windows.

5. Reduce the size of your Internet Browser cache - you probably don't need more than 50 - 100MB of cache - anything more is just going to add to the defragmentation of your disk, and require time to search through when comparing what is held in the cache with the pages being loaded in the browser.

6. Lastly, if your computer hardware is very old then you will probably have reached the limit of performance when running Windows but you could get better performance using one of the smaller Linux distributions such as Puppy Linux which works well with older hardware and can be run from a CD to get an idea what improvement you would see.

My HP Pavilion a1120n is running very slow I re formated it a few time over the years. Recently I added more ram and ran great till i clean it with air may , then ran very slow, so I remove some ram then...

Did you replace the hard drive? It is quite possible there is an issue with the drive at that age. YOu could try an application called "SpeedFan" or "HD Tune" and run a S.M.A.R.T test on it. This will help you determine the drive status. You can run a benchmark with "Hd Tune" and determine the speed of the drive. If you want to post your results, I will certainly help out further.

My system says, (RAM) radon access memory low cpu intel (r) pentium 4 cpu, version 2.80 ghz. RAM 256 mb. What can I do to resolve this problem. Dell 4700 dimension

Windows XP requires a "bare-minimum" of 128MB of RAM, works "OK" with your 256MB of RAM, if you don't open too many programs at the same time, and if you close/re-open Internet Explorer about once an hour of usage.

But, Windows XP would be _much_ "happier" if you added 256MB or 512MB of RAM, because it is telling you ("available random access memory is low") that it is using all the RAM.

Add more RAM -- your computer will run much better.

Hi menz44,

Here are some things to consider:
  • perform disk cleanup and defrag
  • ad more memory
  • upgrade to a better video adapter/card
  • adjust your system performance - to use less memory.
  • Remove temp files and cookies from IE.
This will help and good luck

My computer is to slow

you did not specify what is the speed of your processor, and the memory of your ram. anyway if you computer has a ram memory of 512mb you need to install an additional ram and try to maximize. if the maximum ram memory is 2gigabytes do this to improve the performance of your pc

Vista really slow even after clean install with 6400 AMD 9800GX2 and 2GB ram and m2n32-SLI deluxe

Vista is faster when it is clean install. the only reason when computer come to very slow when the hard drive is defective. or there is a hardware that defective also. please remove some hardware one by one and test. like CD?DVD ROM and others,

REfix also the memory and then obesrved the computer, if all the suspected hardware were remove and same performance maybe you need to replace the harddrive:

PS:pls do not rate me if my solution not solve the issue and you need more further information. but if is invaluable solution rate me fixya.
