To activate your external monitor you use the Fn key + the F key that has the monitor image on it. Its usually a rectangle with a vertical line on either side. Your press and hold the Fn key and then tap the F key with the monitor image in the same color as the Fn key.

You can reboot your laptop and while it is just restarting press F10 to access the setup screens. If you can see this on your external monitor this part is working. Laptops are designed to automatically recognize an external monitor and mirror your laptop's screen. Lets hope you see those screens. Otherwise, you have more wrong While in the setup screens (and these vary from model to model) look for the command to use the external monitor, since your Fn+F4 sequence isn't working for you.

Most laptops are designed to recognize that an external monitor has been connected and will automatically enable this connection. If your laptop is not doing this something more than your screen has been broken.

    Hi,

Did you change this rating from helpful to thanks for trying? We've had some trouble with people changing these and screwing up everyone's ratings. I recall looking these over this morning and it was Helpful.

    Can you help?

I have an hp pavilion dv9815nr notebook pc. My laptop turns on, but when I enter the first letter of my password the screen goes black. Computer sound like it is still running but just black screen

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barelysee the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can beany kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vgacable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves yourvideo card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you rebootwithout you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN(Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correctkey for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key willnormally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash lightand nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card isbad.

I have a XPS M1530 the screen is black I press the power button for a second it stay on everything lights up sounds and feels like its on gets warm but nothing on the screen Itrying everything taking out...

You either have a Video Card problem or an issue with your LCD Screen.

Does it every post anything to the screen? If nothing ever posts on the screen when you hit the power button and it will not do anything with an external monitor, then your Video Card is bad. I wonder if you have the Nvidia Graphics Video card on your system?

If it seems like the laptop booted up all the way (you hear fans running, hard drive spinning, see lights) but the screen is black then try the steps below.

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barely see the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves your video card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Blank screen

Did it boot all the way? Do you hear the fan running, disk drive spinning? If it sounds like it booted but the display is black, try this:
When you press the power button do you hear fansrunning, hard drive spinning, lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lightsconstantly blinking, hear the DvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer ofthe DvD/CD turn on for a second or two? If so the laptop is trying toboot or may have booted, but the screen is not showing for some reason.

Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with thelaptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issuewhen you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous.
