My pc was working fine with 128 + 256 ram. few days ago it didnt boot.it was restarting automatically. then i removed 256 ram and it booted normally.means pc works normally with 128 ram but not with 256...

i guess u have 2 different RAM cards in the RAM slots....
the main issue is both dont work together...the primary reason is compatibility....or one of the RAM cards have worn out...
u must use exactly similar kind of RAMs in both slots....
i suggest u use one 512 MB if your motherboard supports....
RAM technology has advanced so mush that you wont get RAMs for old PCs (motherboards)....so u decide...
pls revert back...and kindly leave a feedback and rating for this solution...it will help me move to Guru" here from Expert at Fixya....
regards...

I have compaq presario 5000 series...and iwant upgrade my ram ...i have 128+128 sd ram so how much i upgrade my ram...can i upgrade 512+512 sd ram OR 256+256 sd ram...thank you

the RAM upgrade will depend on ur motherboard capacity and specification.
u need to check ur MB manual
if ur MB can have only SD RAM then only SD RAM upgrade is possible...DDR will not work....
so be careful while buying ur RAM

intelD845GLLy MB...the following details are from the intel website

http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d845glly/sb/CS-012825.htm

System Memory Features
The D845GLLY board provide the following memory features:
  • Two DIMM sockets supporting 3.3 V (only) 168-pin 133 MHz Single Data Rate (SDR) SDRAM DIMMs with gold-plated contacts
  • Unbuffered non-ECC DIMMs only
  • Maximum total system memory: 2 GB; minimum total system memory: 64 MB
  • Serial Presence Detect (SPD) DIMMs only
  • Suspend to RAM
Caution Do not use ECC DIMMs with the Desktop Board. Using ECC DIMMs could damage the Desktop Board.
Integrator's Notes:
  • Registered DIMMs are not supported on the Desktop Board.
  • This Desktop Board has been designed to support DIMMs based on 512 Mbit technology for a maximum onboard capacity of up to 2 GB, but this technology has not been validated on this board.

Note To be fully compliant with all applicable PCI33 SDRAM memory specifications, the board should be populated with DIMMs that support the Serial Presence Detect (SPD) data structure. This allows the BIOS to read the SPD data and program the chipset to accurately configure memory settings for optimum performance.
hope this helps
Reg....bye

Memory

if you have two sticks of ram .... 256 each one is not working... take them out and reseat them. if that doesn't work swap slots.... you are likely using about 8mb for system video or perhaps more so you are not likely to show a full 512 mb.
