I am from South Africa and I purchased a JVC GR-290AG DV camera in Singapore in April 2006.
The first problems I experienced with this camera was while recording, the picture sometimes goes bright, then very dark. Sometimes I get the "Lens cap on" error message when the cap is acutally off and the place I am recording in is very well lit.
The camera plays previosuly recorded tapes very clear and normal - it is only when recording that I have this problem.
I thought it could be that some of the settings were incorrect and I reset all the settings to factory defaults, but I still have the same problem.
Could you please let me know what the problem is and if it is a minor problem which I can rectify myself or do I need to take it to a JVC dealer/repair shop in South Africa - and if so, how do I get hold of JVC repair shops in South Africa.
Check customer support on the JVC website - there has been a massive worldwide problem with the CCD IC which causes the symptons you describe. They may repair free of charge even if out of warranty.
