Computer wont see whole hard drive

Hi,

I installed a new hard drive on our Dell Dimension 8100 - P4 and while it will recongnize the drive it does not recognize the whole 500GBs. It only "sees" about 127GBs, however, when I go to the Disk Manager it shows the remainder as unallocated. Do I need a PCI controller card? If so, which kind? The new hard drive is a Seagate PATA/100.
Thanks very much!

Hi mclarenwkj

i realy dont think that you need pci controller card all it doing is spliting it up because some of the towers can not handle that much gbs so if you feel that you need to buy a pci controller card that is up too you.

thanks tazman

Re-install new computer lost SN

Try to do this:
Uninstall all of this program and then re-boot the computer.

You should be able to re-install with the serial numbers provided.

If not, then you should call the company and get your information first hand, this may be what you would like to do first anyway.

You can lose information like this if you have re-installed Windows, or have had to install a new mother board or a hard drive, and some cards, all of wich requires to re-install some of Windows. In such a re-install, the information which is stored in Windows' folders will be overwritten with a new folder and new information.

I need the specs on my disk drive to replace it. I want to buy a new one and I lost the owner manual that tells me what will and wont coordinate with my laptop

If you are going to take your computer apart anyway, you could use a dry run. Shut everything down and disassemble your computer, pull the hard drive and read all the numbers right off the case, write 'em down and go on line to match models and retrieve the specs....voila. When you put everything back together again it will work just the way it did before.
Now, walking you through installing and copying your hardrive is a whole 'nother sumthin.

I have a dead hard drive 2.5" SATA

If it is truly dead and you MUST have the information from it then the only real alternative is to send it to a data recovery expert. These services are NOT cheap
If it clicks or makes random noises clicks pings etc then it is most likely dead I am afraid.

SCSI vs. SATA vs. PCI Controllers

to use your external hard drive as boot drive you will need to set bios to boot from it if the bios allows you to
i do not know which section of the dell bios it is but it will have boot order or similar you will have to follow instruction to set it the main problem having extenal boot is windows will not install to USB devices

As for the hard drive from dell it could be a sata drive they sold you you need the standard one
Hope this helps your dilemma

Video capture plextor av100u

You need XP or 2000 for that. Nothing else will work.
You may try MS virtual PC (free) and install virtual windows XP, that may be a very stupid but effective workaround.
