Near the end of the dishwashing cycle there was a burning/smoke odor in the upper right hand corner of the door near the start button. I immediately opened the door and puffs of smoke came out. I first looked at the bottom of the washer to see if something had dropped and was burning and that was not the case. I stopped the cycle and unplugged thedishwasher. I believe it was on the drying cycle. What could this be? I purchased the dishwasher July 2002 and do not use it every day since we have a small family.

Hi, your problem is most likely a sensor or some sort of damage has been done to the main controller board, by a power spike etc.
What you need to do, is troubleshoot your issue to find the cause, accordingly, I have found you a service manual, so you can do this also I have included a DIY, website to assist you.

If you do not wish to DIY, then it is my professional advise that you please call a Kitchen Aid service center and ask for an engineer to call and give you a "Quote" for the repair, this way you can then make an informed decision as to what to do.
