I have an Amana Model PTH15-350A through the wall heat & cool unit . pretty old . Has worked very well but now the heating is very low and I don't hear the compressor kicking in when I turn it on . What should be checked first ?? Could the refrigerant be so low to prevent the compressor from coming on ??? The air filter is clean.

switch thermostat to emergency heat. Call for service the unit should be under warranty. Be aware that using heating strips will cause your electric to go extremely high.
What is -the outside? Heat pump, gas, electric heat combination? You may need to back track, double check the Honeywell configuration jumper or software settings for your type of heating used.
The cold that you describe may be just unconditioned air? If you are certain you can hear the comp operating for a couple of minutes, and then the heat starts, I would guess it is a reversing valve issue if it's a heat pump and it probably is. Or the control board acting up. I've had a lot of issues with the boards in the Amanda PTAC units. I can't remember how to configure it, but if you Google "Amanda ptac configuration", there is a lot of info online. May try a reset method first. Hope this helps!
The first 3 answers were from idiots. If a person had read her problem they would understand that it is not a oven / stove, but a PTAC unit that heats and cools a room. This type of unit is what is commonly seen in hotels and motels where the individual heating / cooling system is in each room.
