Question about Dell Inspiron 4000 Notebook

1 Answer

CD/DVD drive stopped working gradually

The CD/DVD drive (front bay) I got with my Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop has gradually stopped working. The drive appears to plug in fine and receives power. I can open it and insert a cd or cd rom, and the drive starts to spin. But less than a second after I hear it start spinning it stops again and the disk is not read, let alone played. I can remove the disk fine. Help!

I tried this, but when I get to step 5 on the link page you sent, UpperFilters is not one of my choices in the right pane, nor in any subfolder of that long number/letter name folder.

  1. Ensure the Drive is seen in MY Computer
  2. Try removing the upper and lower filters per this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
If the drive is seen in BIOS and in MY COMPUTER, but will not read any media after running the microsoft fix and rebooting, then replace the drive.

If no upper filters, then go to the next step

Hi, my problem on dell inspiron 1526 is this: SYSTEM MODULAR BAY cannot be indentified.... problem is that CD/dvd drive show signs of work(when i turn my computer on Green led blinks, motor starts to rotate...

If the drive functions in another system the the issue is either the motherboard contacts or the controller. Flash the BIOS to the most current version and reset the BIOS defaults. If the drive still doesn't detect, then a motherboard replacement is likely in order.

My Dell Inspiron's DVD has suddenly begun making a loud humming noise when I play a video? Why?

This is usually happens if the DVD drive receives too little power from the laptop or maybe it's just needs a cleaning.
I would try first to clean it from the inside, using a cleaning CD. If that doesn't help you will have to check maybe with a technician if the drive is receiving enough electricity.
Some info- Dell is known for her malfunctioning drives, mine sucks. It reads okay, but burns crappy CD+DVD. sometimes these drives needs to be replaced after a while

Error code 1046: new hard drive, still problems

since the keyboard and dvd are on different controllers it may be the motherboard but then I have seen weird things when memory goes bad. I would download memtest on another computer and burn it to cd and run it from bootup and test the memory first. If not the memory then motherboard is a likely answer

External Floppy disk drive or External CD/DVD drive. Might be easier to just replace the internal drive.

Dump of Physical Memory

Put the Dell CD in the drive bay. Turn on the computer and start pressing <F12> key. It should say "Preparing one-tome boot" When the screen shows a selection menu for the boot device, use the arrow keys to select the CD and press <Enter> key. That should run the Dell CD. Follow the onscreen prompts to run diagnostics checks
