Question about Panasonic Audio Players & Recorders

4 Answers

I have a Panasonic SA-AK300 CD changer that i bought about 5 years ago. My kid stuffed about 10 CD's in it, one on top of the other, and I had to take the thing apart to fish the discs out. I put the stereo back together and everything looks fine, but when I try to power up all I get is a digital "F61" blinking on and off the display. What's the problem?

Hey there,

You are not alone with the dread 'f61' error. It occurs for a lot of reasons. The cause is a burned out IC.

According to Panasonic tech support, it's an unsubstantiated (not undocumented) error.

But it's fixable.

Click here for the stereo411 page concerning this error and the fix. The decision to fix it will depend on your comfort level with a soldering gun. But it will be an informed decision.

let me know how it goes.

    Hello again cheryse,

Following up here. I did a little more searching on the causes (and solution) of your 'F61' error.

According to the manual, it is a fault with AC power or the speakers. (Not!!)

It's pretty much a given that when the CD's got jammed, something overloaded trying to close or re-open the drawer.

According to Panasonic Customer Support (and I quote):

"Thank you for your email enquiry.

To clarify, the F61 that has been displayed is a self-diagnostic fault
code, requiring attention by a qualified engineer. This is not an inherent
fault with the product but a guide for the engineer to know where, within
the product, he should seek the cause of the problem.

We suggest that the product is submitted to either your retailer or to an
authorised service agent for attention. Those in your local area can be
    found through our website;"

(This is a copy of the e-mail response, the spelling errors are theirs, not mine.)

The real cause is heat. There is an Integrated Circuit (STK470-050) that has become notorious for failing throughout the Panasonic SA Series.

While Panasonic's suggestion to take it to a qualified dealership does merit consideration, your stereo is five years old. They may charge you more than it would cost to replace.

On the other hand, you have already taken it apart.

If you were inclined to fix it yourself, you have the type of comfort level required. If you also have experience with a soldering gun and patience, you can fix it yourself for under Forty dollars.

Below is a link to a discussion page devoted to 'F61' Errors. Some of them got tired of waiting and found a way to fix it themselves.

What you're looking for is a post by 'ragtop67gto'.
It's an excellent step by step of the fix.

Click here for a source to purchase the IC chip.

    Bottom Line:

    • If you know your way around the interior of a stereo, you can fix it yourself. (90% effective)

    • Bring it to an authorized service agent (90% effective)

    • Other than that, it's history.
Just trying to be thorough. If you need further info let me know. (click the ASK button)

    Thanks for using Fixya
    Mike

(Personal Note: If you thought about fixing it yourself, even for a second; Go for it, little risk, high reward.)

Anyone have service manual for Panasonic SA-PM18?

Yes, you have to destroy your Panasonic SA-PM 18 with a srewdriver and than meet the CD changer with a hammer. If this doesn't help you must take this changer into a box - wait a few years and than throw it in the waste. ::))
