I believe my 4 year old son wrote on the screen of my 42" Sony Grand Wega TV (purchased in 2003) with a marker. The screen has a large yellow spot and a line on the right side. Is there a cost effective way to repair this?

Defective light engine. Contact Sony support. They warrantied a lot of these sets even after the warranty had expired because of so many going bad after 3-4 yrs. Have the complete model and serial number ready when you call them.
