It won't turn on at all, is there away I could somehow reset it?

  • Anonymous Jul 24, 2008

My RCA Opal MP3 player will not turn on, so I pressed the restart button with the end of a paper clip. It turned on, but it took like 15 minutes and then died after about 30 minutes. I also checked to make sure the hold was not on and it wasn't. I recharged it, but then it wouldn't turn on at all, not even with the restart button. I charged it again and there was nothing left in the battery, and I didn't use in in between the 2 times I charged it (which was only a few minutes after I charged it the first time) I think the battery is not holding it's charge. What should I do about this?

ok i put a burnt cd in my rca and it quite workin

I have the same sort of problem... I think. Like, okay, I turned it on this morning and it worked perfectly fine.. I turned it off for church. When I come back out of church and go to turn it on again, it gets to the 'Please Wait' screen, and it froze [I know it froze cause usually when it's loading the little period dots like, go to three then fade and start over.. well it was stuck on 2 for like 5 minutes],.. so I turned it off and tried again, then it was stuck on the Initializing screen for like ever.
    So I decided when I got home to just try to plug it in to charge it... but now, it won't even read it. Like, it's as if it's not plugged in. The screen wont come up to say it's connected, my computer doesn't react, and it won't turn on at ALL now. ><;;;

Make sure hold/lock is not engaged

Restart

Get the firmware upgrade from RCA website

If it is less than a year old, call RCA if these methods fail and get a replacement - hope you still have your receipt.

Wow, I didn't realize so many people were having the same problem I was having. First try re-installing the firmware for it. Since your computer won't recognize it you will need to download the software, then you will have 2 boxes pop up. One is the install instructions and the other is the actual program install. You will have to hold down the play button on your player while you plug it into the computer. DO NOT RELEASE THE BUTTON UNTIL THE PROGRAM SAYS "INITIALIZING".

It should work fine once you do this. I spent 3 hours going through RCA's website before I came across this step.

Fatal error on RCA Opal:
What do I do if I experience a Fatal Error? How Do I reset my Opal?
The Opal has a reset hole on the back of the unit in which a toothpick (non metallic) can be inserted to reboot the player. If this does not work, I suggest that you reformat the player by using the Windows format command on the unit. To reformat the memory:
Right click on the device within the Explorer or My Computer window
Select the format command (full format) to reformat the internal memory of the device.
Reinstall the firmware from http://download.rcaaudiovideo.com/downloads/opal_fwutility_v2.3.0.exe

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.

Mine didn't recognize either, so what I did is go into the device manager, find the opal in the listings, double-click, disabled the device, re-enabled it, at which time it shows that there's a firmware error. I then re-installed the driver from the cd, unplugged the opal, plugged it back in, and for whatever reason, the computer then recognized the opal as a mass storage device, instead of a portable music player. The computer now sees it everytime, and all I have to do is drag and drop any files I want into the opal. Works like a charm. Hopefully RCA will provide an updated firmware program in the near future, but this might work for you for now. Good luck!

WWON'T POWER ON

For one, you don't need the CD to put music on the Opal. It's a plug and play device. Go to My Computer on your desktop and you will see under Audio Devices "OPAL". Click on that and you'll see a folder called "Media" and that's where you put your music.

For not turning on, click Pause/Play twice

For charging, You need to plug in the USB cord into the computer to charge it. Wait 3 hours. The Opal doesn't have a real long battery life, i'd say around 10-15 hours. So you'll be needing to charge it quite a bit.

RCA Opal troubleshooting

Make sure the Hold Button - it's on the side of the Opal - is off.  When the hold button is on, it makes the Opal think the Flash disk is full, and you get all kinds of wacky reactions.
Hope this helps...
