Question about Dell UltraSharp 1800FP 18.1" LCD Flat Panel Monitor

1 Answer

1800FP ICE chip

Thanks a lot,

I think I am going to order the ICE chip and solder it into the circuit. Are there very specific chips for each monitor or is this something I could just pick up from any old electronics store?

The ICE chip is not so easy to get. Your best bet is to use the ebay source. cheap quick and easy. It would need to be an electronics wholesaler, a trade type distributor to get that part. Most would not stock it.

Philips 60 convergence problem

When you take off the back of the TV, you should see a fairly large circuit board with two black chips that are standing vertical. They should each say STK392-XXX (where the X's are typically 100, 110, etc.). The "convergence chips," as they are called, can cost you anywhere from 15-30 dollars depending on where you buy them. You can either go to a TV repair shop and have them order the parts for you, which means there would be a middle man, or you could find some online. has a number of kits available to make the job easier. You just plug in the brand, type, and model number of the TV and you can look at the various kits they offer. Last time I checked it was roughly $70.00 for two chips, soldering guide, online support, and some other stuff.

Another option would be to simply type the chips code (STK3392-XXX) into a search engine (google, yahoo, etc.) and then see if you can buy the chips alone. This would msot definitley be a cheaper option.

Once you have ordered the convergence chips, you are going to have to remove the circuit board/wires and anything attached to the circuit board. Once you have the circuit board out, you are going to need to flip the circuit board over and remove the solder using a soldering gun and some "wick" that will soak up the solder. You will have to do this for both chips, flip the circuit board over, remove the clamps, then remove the chips. Next, I would insert the chip, clamp it in, flip the circuit board back over and begin soldering the pins individually. Do this for both chips.

Chances are, you are also going to have to repalce some resistors as well. To do this you will need a multimeter that measures ohms and a chart telling you how to read resistors. One can be found on under the hints/tips section.

All in all, it should only take about an hour with fairly good soldering skills. So you will need a screwdriver with a "star" shaped head, possibly a philips head screw driver, and a steady set of hands to remove the circuit board. Then you will need some desoldering wick, a soldering iron (I would use a 15 watt iron), some small-diameter flux-core solder (rosin), and some patience. There a PLENTY of youtube videos that go through the repair step-by-step.

It's not as bad as it may seem after reading this article. Soldering is not difficult, however, when working with circuity it can be somewhat easy to screw something up. That being said...a little confidence and a lot of patience should get you through it. Good Luck!!!

Blown chip on 160GB Maxtor SATA hard drive

unfortunally the chips on these circuit boards contain a lot of unique data specific to this disk, such as the mapping data, this specific run of hdd software, translator for data coming in to how it is actually written on the disk. and final fine tuning the disk uses to locate its track, meaning they are not universal , but usually only fit the specific production run.

so in short, it may be possible to lure the data out, but it is a highly specialized task generally not possible to do yourself. data recovery work is very time consuming and highly skilled work, therefor very expensive.
this is why its always best to back up critical data on several disks, and ideally on offsite storage server

hope this clears things up. dells third party who built these units did a rotten job on this model. that chip always fails.

Ice 2as01 is broken again

Resolder diodes D903 and D906 in the secondary of power supply. The diodes are the two mounted to a heatsink. These are the reason the 2AS01 goes out in the first place. The solder joints on these two diodes breaks loose. If you don't solder them, the 2AS01 will go out again.

Dell 1800FP Dark, No Power but power supply seems fine. Help!

I just repaired 3 1800FP's - all dead, no lights.
Firstly a dead 2AS01 is 95% of the problem, because some fool designer left out the protective zener diode - cheapness.
Mouser Electronics does not have this part, but lists it at 37 cents in lots of 2500, and gettable at $2.66 somewhere else.
You must also replace the two small value electrolytics near this IC, as some had an ESR of 40 where <0.5 is where it should be.
I suppose as the electro's dry out, the spikes can zap the IC. The quacks on ebay flogging 2sa01's alone, probably hope to sell you another one down the track (at a fat markup).

There are 2 'Sam Young 2200uf' electros that really should be replaced, with ESR or 2-30 ! Ideally replace ALL electros, as the others will be off - but those 4 as a minimum and using a jewelers loupe, resolder other joints on the transformer and anything that looks more dull silverish, than the rest. A 1 inch used and worn paint scraper will get the case open easy.

DANGER, CAUTION : Finally when refitting the inverter board, ensure the steel tab is over the TOP middle of the board facing away from the power socket (SO YOU CAN SEE IT) . The board sides in flat. It is possible to scew the board down with a slight bend, with the tab pressing over the pcb tracks - very , very bad!

Now all I need is for some kind soul to improve the fix by stating what the value of the missing zener should be.

PS. Just because the caps are not bulging does not mean they should be OK. Most wrecked 10 year old power supplies have better ESR's, so the electronics must be hot under the cover.
I have seen bulging caps with a GOOD ESR, and non bulging ones with an ESR of 47.
