Since you just purchased it, probably the best thing to do is to go into the system recovery and restart it. To access it, press they key that it indicates during startup...usually F10 but can be F11. It will take you to the recovery console. Press advanced as that will wipe your hard drive clean and do the reinstall. Follow the prompts and your computer will be just like it was when you first brought it home.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate this as fixya.

I'm sorry.....but you said you wouldn't mind restoring your computer and now three people have given you the instructions on doing so but you rated 2 of us thanks for trying. Could you please come back and either rate as fixya or at the very least helpful because that was your question. Sure, we could walk you through on fixing the problem but sometimes fixing it doesn't clear everything out and the best possible solution since it is only days old would be to restore it and start over.

If you have recovery disks you can also restore system by restarting the laptop with recovery cd inside.
Otherwise use HP recovery manager pressing F11 on startup.
If you do not have recovery cd and recovery manager does not work, you will need a replacement recovery cd from HP or a generic Windows setup disk.

Restore the PC to original condition with the HP Recovery Manager Follow the steps below to use HP Recovery Manager to return your notebook to its baseline factory condition, then allow the PC to run all the setup programs.

  1. Press the power button to turn on the PC, and press F11 on the keyboard immediately while the computer is starting up. The HP Backup and Recovery Manager window will appear.
  2. Click Advanced options , select the System recovery option, and then click Next .
  3. If the Recovery Manager can access the hard drive it displays a prompt to backup up user files before continuing the recovery. You may either backup your files, or skip the backup and recover the operating system.
  4. If the Recovery Manager cannot access the hard drive to fix the system errors, use the set of Recovery disks that you created to recover the hard drive to its original condition.
After the hard drive is returned to its original condition, restart the PC and allow the PC to run all the setup programs. if thias does not work then you should return it to supplier

Can i get V3000 motherboard CD of compaq?

Absolutely! Just contact HP. (HP bought out Compaq)
Go to HP.com/Support, and on this page click on Contact HP.

Here is the HP.com/Support page,
http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html
In the upper left corner you will see -> Contact HP.
Click on it.
Now you're on the Customer Service/Contact HP page.

I would advise calling HP. Much faster than email, and you'll get direct customer service by talking to a nice representative. (Really! Very nice people!)

Look under the heading in Orange -> Call HP
Click on the Blue -> Technical support after you buy.
It's a toll free number. 1-800-334-5144.

You'll need some specific information for YOUR laptop. This way you'll be assured to get THE Restoration Disk, for YOUR laptop.
(Their term is -> Recovery Disk)
You know you have a Compaq Presario V3000, but you need the exact model number.
You'll find this information located on the bottom of your laptop, in a white -> Service Tag.
Here's more information,
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&dest_page=product&docname=c00033108&product=212728

I purchased a Recovery Disk for a friends Compaq desktop, about 2 years ago. (Saved me a bunch of hassle with installing a new O/S) The disk was free. The shipping and handling was not. $17 for a 5 to 7 day ship, $24 for a 2 to 3 day ship.
(After you install the disk, it will come to a place that asks if you want to do a Fresh Install, or a Repair. Do a Repair)

Laptop help again :)

Don't panic, the situation is not too bad, as the laptop's hardware is still all ok.
The Ghost software probably did not work because you did not make a complete bootable ghost CD from Windows when computer was working, or you did not do the ghosting procedure properly, or finally the ghost cd is corrupted.
if F11 does not work, it means that the recovery partition on hard disk had probably been corrupted by the virus.
Check if your laptop is covered by some insurance or extended guaranty to cover expenses for system reinstall.
Best way to proceed is asking a copy of restore cd fro your model from HP.
Contact them and ask how to obtain a copy of CD in your region, In UK they charge you £25 or so to send you the disk.
If for some reason you cannot get the restore cd, you will have to re-install system from a generic windows cd, possibly the same Windows version to validate the licence on Windows sticker at the bottom of your laptop (eg. Vista Home, XP home edition, XP professional etc.).
If you have to use a generic Windows disk you will need to download all drivers from HP. and install them after installing Windows.
Also a good choice can be locating a computer repair shop in your area and having the system re-install done using the licence number printed on the sticker at the bottom of your laptop. This job usually is not too expensive, in London, where I work, we charge £45 to do system restore.
Good luck.
