Question about Vacuums

Burnt smell on my Dirt Devil Upright Vacuum Cleaner Model #085430

My vacuum smell burnt... I thought at first it was because the belt needed replacement so I bought a new one and replaced it but when I vacuum I can still smell burnt and notice smoke coming out of it. So, I paid close attention where its coming from and I notice that it is not coming from the same side where the belt is located but on the opposite side which look like where you switch on and off.

I'm on a limited income and can't afford a new vacuum or get it fix so I'm hoping someone can tell me how to fix it. I'm fast learner if someone can walk me through it would appreciate it. Thanks.

take off the bottom like you are replacing the belt. You will find a little metal clip that controls the upright lock.  It may be lose or broken.

Any warranty dealer for Dirt Devil should be able to supply a schematic for that machine. They have access to the dealer web site and can download the information.

Are you talking about the beater bar? If so, you probably have a broken belt

I replaced the belt as I have done before on Self-Propelled Vision. When turned on it is very loud and left on too long will smoke and you can smell the belt deteriorating. I do not feel this is a belt...

The best way to check if the motor is burning or not is to go back into the unit and take the belt off of the motor shaft. If the unit does the same thing and burns or even if the lights flicker when the unit is on, then it is definitely the motor.

Usually the burning smell associated with this is like a burnt match or burnt wood.

good luck.

Has a burnt rubber smell when i use it

The belt may be worn or is about to break. It would be time to change the belt. This should solve the whole problem there. I believe the belt is a style 15 for this unit. your closest vacuum dealer should have one in stock.

Brush bar can't spin

Hi There,

Actually I just answered a question almost identical to yours! The belt on his model continiously snapped also.

I walked him through how to check the problem, and he was able to get his vacuum fixed. It really sounds to me like your brush roller has gone bad as well.

Also here, another link to the exact roller brush that your model take on our website if you haven't already purchased one.

Vacuum Belt keep breaking

When your first belt burnt, the burnt plastics goes into the roller ends and then it dries off causing your roller to not turn or put more pressure on your belt. Until you clean that you will continue burning your belts soon after you put them in. You need to add a little bit of WD40 or any other type of lubricant after you remove the tar from the roller.

That means that the belt2_bing.gif is starting to wear. When the belt starts to stretch it can't turn the roller brush against the resistance of the carpet and therefore doesn't pick up well. You simply need to change the belt. Here is a link to the belt you need and to the manual:

Vacuum motor shaft too hot

Check the brush roll ends, will they turn easily or is one frozen. If so, you need to replace the brush roll. If the motor turns on, it and the belt are trying to turn the brush roll and can't. Also check the ends where the brush roll sits in and make sure it hasn't overheated and melted., If it did you will have to replave the base.
