My "CD-ROM" is missing from "MY COMPUTER"

Hi,

I clicked on "MY COMPUTER" and found that my "CD-ROM" drive is not there. I'vecontacted HP Tech Support and I was told to "re-seat" my CD-ROM drive and if that didn't work to follow the steps below.

-Start-
Step 1:- Assigning the drive letter to the CD/DVD drive.

1.Click Start, Control Panel.
2. Double click on Administrative Tools.
3.Double-click on Computer Management.
4.Click on the "+" sign beside Storage to expand the list.
5.Click once on Disk Management.
6.On the right hand side the DVD/CD drive will be listed as "CD-ROM 0".
7.Right click on the drive and select Change Drive Letter.
8.Click on Add if there is not drive letter assigned or click on Change if there is already a drive letter assigned.
9.Change the drive letter from the pull down and click Ok.changed to 'E' drive .Please check in my computer if the cd/dvd drive is present.

Step 2: Deleting UpperFilter and LowerFilter Registry Keys

1. Click Start and click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit and click OK.
3. Click the plus (+) sign beside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
4. Click the plus (+) sign beside System.
5. Click the plus (+) sign beside Current Control Set.
6. Click the plus (+) sign beside Control.
7. Click the plus (+) sign beside Class.
8. Locate the {4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} key and click it.
9. On the File menu, click Export.
10. In the File name box, type savedkey and click Save. It is better to save the "savedkey" to the desktop.
11. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters (found in right window pane) and then click Delete on the Edit menu.
12. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
NOTE: If this data type is missing, continue to the next method.
13. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters (found in right window pane) and click Delete on the Edit menu.
14. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
15. Quit the Registry Editor and restart the computer.

Step 3: Uninstall and Reinstall the Device drivers :

1. Press Windows Key + R key
2. This opens the Run window Type devmgmt.msc and hit enter key.
3. You will get device manager
4. Click "+" beside CD/DVD Device Catagory.
5. Right-click the listed CD/DVD/RW and select Uninstall.
Scan for the HARDWARE Changes.

I recommend you to perform with the steps to get the issue fixed.
-End-

Following the steps above fixed the issue the first time. But now I have the same problem again. HP has told me that I will probably need a new CD-ROM drive... What a surprise that my CD-ROM will need replacement after the 1-yr warranty expires! I have taken care of my laptop ever since I bought it and now after the warranty, some how it stops working? I don't believe that.

My correct product info:
HP Pavillion Notebook
Model: dv6338se
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium Edition

>>>Disregard what it says as my product below for I have only choosen it so I can complete this post. Overwise, it would not allow me to complete. Kept on telling me to "Please enter a valid product"<<<

Please, if you know how I can permanently fix this issue, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

-Robert

HHHHeeeeellllppp ..... I'm having the same problem with my Compaq laptop, the drive still opens and close when i press the button on the side, but nothing can be seen in 'My Computer' .. and the device manager doesn't show up CD/DVD Drives .... there's just no where i could 'communicate' with the drive, everything just went 'poofed' and gone.

I've did the UpperLower filter thing and it's still not working. But I'm quite sure it's some software issue ... but i hadn't install anything not known .... help~~ and HP/Compaq laptops start giving me tons of problems after just 2 years. My Vaio after 4 years still running top notch problem free

Actually, the tech was right. It is not uncommon for optical drives to go out just like that. Since you've tried the steps listed above and your computer still cannot see your optical drive, then the drive must be replaced.

Drive does not need replaced...this is a software conflict..especially after SP1 update. If you go back to restore back to original (factory)the drive magically appears. This also happens when you upgrade to Win 7 and after trying to remove burning software. Trust me I have had this happen 5 times already. The thing that is funny is not everyone has the same exact issue when needing to remove the upper filters and lower filters. Mine had upper filter there but not the lower filter and nothing had shown in the device manager. I even went as far as buying a brand new drive just to see if that was the problem. As long as you do not update pass the SP1 update the drives stay. This is a conflict between updating Microsoft and HP drivers.

SOURCE: many the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL

Hi, I believe you are an experiencing an issue with the CD/DVD drive on your computer. In the registry the following subkey:- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}-upper filter/lower filters should not be present if they are present that would effect the functionality of the drive. Please check whether you are able to view the contents of the CD/DVD by going into computer right click on CD/DVD drive icon and then click on open and if you are able to view the contents of the DVD/CD then the drive is working fine and please try the following steps:- One of these may help:
1. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
2. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.
Incase this doesn't work please perform the below menioned step:- Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista case).
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.
Thank you for your patience and best wishes for your effort.

My hp pavalion dv6910 dvd/cdw driver is missing

Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver

you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd restart your computer then plug them back this should activate the found new hardware wizard

if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer
Close all open programs

Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Upper Filters

Lower Filters

Upper Filters.bak

Lower Filters.bak

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

hope it helps

Hi I'm Rain ,
Ok follow these instructions to reboot your CD Rom drive.

  1. click start then My Computer .
  2. In My Computer right click the DVD/CD rom drive icon .
  3. In the list , Click eject to see if the drive is being reconized .
  4. If nothing happens repeat steps 1-2
Now when you get to sep 3 you will click properties .

5. In properties click Hardware .

6. In Hardware click the DVD/CD device to highlight it .

7. Click properties .

Now look to the bottom of that window to see device status .
If it says , this device is working properly .Properties .
Next click Driver . In driver you will see a list of option tabs that allows you to , Roll Back driver Update driver and Disable driver .
The other option is Driver Details.

Click Roll Back driver to restore the driver back to the state before you added the latest program . Click ok and follow the screen instructions.
If this fails , you can follow these steps to get back to Driver and chose
Disable Driver . Click ok if another window pops up.
Now what you are doing is rebooting the DVD/CD rom drive.
This will restart all the drivers that are associated with the DVD/CD rom
device .
Now follow all the steps again to get back to Driver .
Now in Driver you will need to click Enable to restart the DVD/CD rom
device . Reboot your system and try the DVD/ CD tray to see if it responds . If it still fails to respond you most likely will need to replace or service the DVD/CD Rom Hardware { the Tray } .

Go to HP's support website, find your laptop, and get the missing driver, or find out what brand your cd/dvd drive is and go to the manufacturers website to get the driver. I hope this helps!

HI
Can you log into windows normally?
If not, you may need to install windows from the beggining.
In case that windows work fine & the problem is just with system files, you can follow these steps:
1- From Start Menu choose "Run"
2- Type: SFC /SCANNOW
3- Press Enter & insert the windows XP cd when asked, then click continue or restart as the window tells you.

This should help you repair almost every problem in th systm folder.
Hope it works.
