Question about Refrigerators

Ice maker repair and still no ice

My fairly new (15 months old) pricey Kenmore Elite side by side icemaker is not making ice. Sears Home Repair was out...tech said the "motor" was bad and replaced it for $250. He said "you'll have ice in 2 hours" and of course more than 24 hours later, it still has not produced any ice. The water dispenser works fine and am not convinced that the motor was bad since the result is still the same. Any suggestions as they're scheduled to return again tomorrow? No ice. There is water to the dispenser but not to the ice maker. There is no light indicating that the ice maker is on.

  • The refrigerator has a duel water valve, one for the ice-maker and one for the water dispenser . The valve that the ice-maker relies on may be bad,
  • or it could be the ice-maker itself.
  • Another thing that could cause it would be the temperatures in the freezer. The ice-maker will not call for water until it reaches under 15 degrees.
  • In addition, check the water tube behind the ice-maker to make sure it is not frozen, blocking more water from entering.
  • Note: The water does not go to the ice-maker or thru the filter unless the ice-maker turns on the water valve.
btw- you can replace the whole icemaker system for around  $115.00.
  • charging you $250 for a $20 drive motor is ridiculous! my 12 year old son can change the drive motor in 15 minutes.

    • the icemaker system is independent from the refrigerator. the refrigerator only supplies electricity, and a cold environment.

    • the icemaker senses when the temperature is cold enough then it sends electricity to the water valve opening it briefly (3-5 seconds) allowing the water to flow into the trays.

    • after the temperature goes below 15 degrees then a heater turns on and releases the ice from the metal tray.

    •  the drive motor then turns on and dumps the ice and the whole thing repeats.

    • now you know how the icemaker works so the service guy doesn't **** you around.

the icemaker has a wire harness on the side of it that plugs into the refrigerator. this harness may not be plugged in correctly due to the service guy taking it out. this would cause the light not to come on due to no electricity going to the unit. or he may not have reassembled it correctly. or it just might be a bad icemaker.

    • you can reject my solution if you want, but i am committed to helping you with this issue because i know how incompetent some of these "service tecs" are.

Ice maker issues - what to do next?

I have not found Kenmore to do the best with the icemakers; however, you want to make sure that the lever on the side was replaced properly. They have a slot that they need to go into. The other thing that is important is to see if the motor is running on the ice maker. It could be at fault, but if that is the case those units usually are better off replaced as a whole, which runs around $200. You will probably get them cheaper through an appliance dealor rather than going through Sears and there probably is one in your yellow page section of your phone book...hope this helps.

Replaced icemaker with new one but still not working

The ice maker has a problem The ice maker is a separate appliance within the freezer section. Please see the How things Work section of our website to learn about the normal functioning of ice makers. Some common problems with ice makers are:

The ice maker has completely stopped producing ice
The ice maker is producing ice poorly
The ice maker has completely stopped producing ice Check to see whether the ice maker has been turned off. Here's how to check. Look for a wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If this wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. On some units you simply lower the wire to the down position to turn the ice maker on. On others, you lower a small red plastic lever to lower the wire. If the wire is in the proper position check the freezer temperature, it should be between 0-8 degrees Fahranheit. If it is warmer than 10-12 degrees, the ice maker may not produce any ice. Check your door seals and thermostat, repair/replace as necessary.

The ice maker is producing ice poorly When an ice maker is producing ice poorly--when it produces just a few cubes or none, or when the cubes are too small--it's usually because of a clogged water line or a defective water inlet valve.

First, check the water line attached to the back of the refrigerator for good water flow. To do that, first turn off the water supply valve. Then remove the water line from the back of the refrigerator. Next, place the water line into a bucket and momentarily turn the water valve back on to test the flow. If the flow is poor, you need to repair, clean, or replace the tubing or the shut-off valve that supplies the water. If the flow is good, you may have to replace the water inlet valve.

There's an ice- or water-dispensing problem The ice and water-dispensing system of your refrigerator is quite complex. Many components work together to provide the ice and water. Aside from a simple problem of a leaky water tube or a jammed ice chute, most other components are not user serviceable. We suggest that you contact a qualified appliance repair technician for such repairs

    Ice maker not making ice

The most likely cause is the water solenoid behind the fridge. Take an ohm meter and test across the two terminals and it should NOT ohm out (beep). If it does not ohm out I would replace the P.C. Board kit, emitter & receiver icemaker control.

You either have low water pressure to the fridge or fridge water valve is not completely closing causing water to constantly drip through fill tube, Do you have a side by side? if so does water come out steady through the door?

replace the icemaker unit, also make sure if you are on a well system that your pressure is over 30 lbs, it is adviseable to purchase an icemaker kit, which will come with a new water valve as well. either one of the two may be at fault.
you can make this repair yourself.

Either your freezer is not cold enough or you got a defective ice maker. It needs to be 15 degrees or colder to make ice. The water may be frooze but not cold enough to close the internal thermostat inside the ice maker. If your freezer is colder that 15 degrees, take the ice maker back to Sears, you got a lemon. Good luck!, Mack

Ice maker repair and still no ice

Amyc, of course you should call this cat back, but here are a few things to check. Make sure that the fill tube is not frozen over. The black tube feeding water to the IM. Next with the freezer door open your optics should flash twice with a pause repeatedly. Hold the left side emitter flap down and the light should be on steady. If this checks, the optics are good. The ice maker rakes should be at the 2:00 position when it's in it's home positon. Any other position could be a bad module. When the cat comes back to check it out, make sure he jumps the ice-maker to get the unit to fill before he leaves...Catriver..post back.
