Question about Amplifiers & Preamps

Sony STR AV 370

Hello, I have an oldish Sony STR AV 370 receiver/ amplifier - it will work for a while and then stops producing sound and starts flashing a red "p" light. At this point you can also hear something clicking inside. turning it off at the wall for a while and then trying again seems to fix it. Sometimes it will work with no problems all day and other times just won't come to the party at all!

I would be grateful for any advice you could give me.

Jim

Hi jimec

The flashing of the power light indicates that the unit is going into Protection Mode. The relay clicking inside is the speaker protection relay disconnecting the speakers to prevent any damage to them, or any further damage to the amplifier. When you turn it off, it cools down the fault is rectifying itself, and the unit can functionally normally. The most probable cause of this sort of fault, is dry/ cracked solder joints about power regulators, or audio output stages. If you attend to this before the amp stops working altogether, then you may save some money in more expensive part replacement type repairs.

Hi I have got a sony TAFE 370 amplifier which does not produce any output, i have tried different input devices and also checked speaker wiring and the speaker selection is on i used it a day ago and all...

If you can't hear any sound from the headphone output, and by sound I mean a hum with the volume turned up, then the amp has either got a faulty internal power supply or the main amp has failed. Try looking inside to see if any fuse has blown. Also look around to see if you can see or smell anything has blown.

Sony STR-DA3000ES PROTECTOR - CHECK CODE 11

There is a defect in the final amplification stage of the receiver. This may have been caused by a short in the speaker wires. The typical defective parts are the output transistors. Expect a parts cost in the $40 range for this repair. Any audio service shop should be able to repair this.

Sony STR-D590 RECEIVER

This is a power overload protection circuit, to prevent you from blowing out your speakers. It's measuring the amperage through the circuit; I suspect you have a short-circuit in your speaker cables (do you have pets?).

To check, disconnect all speakers, then add one at a time until the problems appears. When it does, that's the speaker wire to check.

Does the receiver say anything on the front like "protect" ? also; check the speaker A/B select switch. There are no speaker fuses in the receiver. Hope this helps

This is not a reset. Most likely one or more transistors have shorted and need to be replaced. Does the front display come on OK?
