Question about Mitsubishi VS-50501 50" Rear Projection Television

6 Answers

Mitsubishi VS-50501A Rear Screen Proj. Picture is painfully bright and will not adjust.

We turned the TV on 2 days ago, and the picture looks as if we turned the brightness all the way up. Adjusting the brightness, contrast and color does nothing at all.

Our toddler banged a book into the screen last week, which caused a pink mark that looks like a 2" water stain in the center of the screen. Could the two be related? I have searched to see if anyone else has had the same issue, but could not find a similar situation. Is there a fix for one or both issues, or is this TV curb bound?? Please help!!

What is generally the cost of a new screen and labor to install? Ballpark guesstimate??

Is it possibly connected (bright screen and pink spot) even though the two happened a few weeks apart? Does the pink watermark stain sound like it was the result of the injury from the book?

Basically, if the labor and parts cost even half of what a new tv would, I'll put it out to the curb tonight.

    Thanks!

I am looking for a second opinion. I was told in my first solution that I will need a new screen and someone to install this. If this is the only solution, could someone please tell me a ballpark estimate of what a new screen costs and labor too? Also, does the pink watermark sound like the result of a book hitting the screen? Is that what generally happens? The screen got bright almost 2 weeks after the hit...does it make sense to take that long for the screen to go bright? The garbage comes tonight, so if the tv costs as much as a new one to fix, I'd rather send it to the curb! Thanks!!

Again, could you tell me a ballpark idea of what I could expect to pay for that type of repair please?

  • rainytuesday Jul 07, 2008

I really need a cost estimate in your opinion to make a good decision. We could purchase a new HDTV in Feb of 2009 if this is too expensive to fix. Please respond with what you think it may cost us to fix this. Thanks!

I would say depending on if you are or a technician is doing it your looking at at least 4-500$ dollars. I would think about investing in a new tv and selling this one on craigslist for parts.
Thanks,
Lee

The two problems are not related. The brightness has to do with the internal circuits changing characteristics. The overall brightness is controlled both by an adjustment on the flyback transformer as well as with electronic circuits. Based upon your sdescription, one or more parts have become defective in the brightness control circuit. The repair of this would be minimal in parts cost. You will need to check for your local labor rate for projections sets to get a better idea of a repair cost. (parts should be less than $10).

As far as the screen goes, there are 2 screens on this set (I believe). The inner screen may be ok (that is the expensive one) and the outer protective screen may be the one with the damage. If the part is available, figure on $100 or so for the screen. The same serice call to repair the brightness problem should be able to replace the screen at the same time.

There might be a possibility that the book cause the failure but is very unlikely.
The failure on your TV is due to a missing 200VDC that feeds the CRTs. It could have an open resistor from the flyback transformer 200VDC line to the CRTs.
In any case, this type of repair is not a DIY due to the number of measurements that need to be done before finding the defective component and the safety guidelines that need to be taken due to the high voltages around the area.

If the estimate is about 1/3 of the price of that TV, then is a fair price to pay for the repair.

    Good Luck.

This will need a replacement of the screen.

since there was a damage of the screen this two can be related.

and you will need some experience to replace the screen

Check that the button is not stuck, if button is ok, then it is a faulty control board

Check if the tv is still under warranty, if it is, this will cover the control/button fault, which probably is not related to the bang on the screen, if you mention the bang on the screen this can invalidate guaranty in case they consider the two problems as related.
Also check if problem persist with remote batteries out, to ensure is not a faulty remote.

    Fixes:
    Screen: replace display, quite expensive.
Control problem: unlock/replace button / replace control board / replace remote, depending on the case.

Repair for brightness problem can range between $100/$200 depending on the problem.
Also replacing the screen goes over $300.
You can find the control panel for about $30 on Ebay
The display price must be requested to Mitsubishi

Here is another similar problem with a Mitsubishi Rear Proj. TV and it has some things to try and an estimate if that is the problem.

"Cost of convergence repair is always around $400"

You could also try messing around in the menu for convergence adjustments. Usually it will let you adjust at 8 points on the screen.

Mitsubishi VS-50501A convergence problem. The image looks like a bow tie and the convergence will not align. This TV only has manual convergence. I already replace the STK391-020 ICs, it has 3 of them....

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit wiith instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms
  • Screen Looks 3-D
  • Colors wont align
  • Screen may look distorted or warped
  • No Audio/Video - makes a chirping sound.
Problem #2

Another common problem is dull or washed out video.
Your TV2_bing.gif may have one or more of the following symptoms....
  • Dull looking picture
  • White looking picture
  • Halos around objects
  • Red/Orange looking picture

Good Day, jvira; Suspect fluid on the PCB's.To find suspected liquid on the PCB's, remove the front speaker cover and the small board held on by 5-6 screws. Look at the first 3 to 5" on the PCB. Use bright light it's not always easy to see. If fluid is spotted remove the boards from the back of TV. Use small brush, like old tooth brush, and acetone. You can get acetone from hardware stores
Look for rusted wires or parts and replace as necessary.
Good Luck, big IRISH.

Good Day, Techwanab;

Look for this to be your problem: CHECK FOR OPEN L2C50 PART #325C146030 ON THE SIGNAL PCB, OR BAD CONNECTIONS AND LEAKY CAPS IN THAT AREA.

Hope this was helpful and not too late.

Mitsubishi VS-6041- picture brightness not very bright

Hi Dawn,
The TV does have a screen control on each of the picture tubes ( there are 3 ) although I do suggest you have a qualified technician make the necessary adjustments as an improper adjustment can cause damage to the set. Should you deside to make these adjustments yourself, you'll need to remove the back ( or front in some sets) ( PRE-CAUTION, UNPLUG THE SET FROM THE WALL BEFORE PREFORMING ANY ADJUSTMENTS INSIDE THE SET ) The screen adjustments are located either on the bottom of each tube or in a group component located where the main High Voltage Wire ( large red wire from the black transformer on the deflection board ) is connected to. Look for a turn pot ( screw type adjustment ) that is marked SCREEN. When you locate it ( whether it be on each tube or in the group component ) turn it up only slightly and not to much, as excessive gain ( turning it up to much ) may cause the TV to shut down. When you have the proper brightness ( when it looks good to you ) close the set up and enjoy the renewed picture. Good luck and I do hope this has helped in some way

Screen goes dark

I thught I answered this one but if you disconnet the sensor it should brighten up the picture If it dosent then its part of the brightness curcuit and must be replace. As I remeber thewre are severall models that you could simply disconnect. Or there should be an auto brightness feature in the main menu picture ajustment to simply disable or shut it off. Good luck
