Vulcan 901 ducted heater not igniting but have pilot light. have tried changing batteries in remote without any success

Could be a number of things
Sounds like it the gas valve. If the gas Valve isn't opening or is burnt out then no gas will flow through it.
Also it the pilot is blocked then you wont get and gas coming through to light it up.
I am forever replacing gas valves on the buffalo series units and have found this to be quite a common problem on older units.

Just been thru a similar problem with my Climate Technologies Vulcan High Efficiency Ducted Gas heater which in this case is installed under the house. This heater is about 7 years old and I have previously (2 years back) refurbished the controller by replacing the main power supply electrolytic filter capacitors.

I also had a communication problem with the Touch pad Thermostat which in the end required replacing the entire touch pad as one of it's voltage regulators had gone intermittent (Touch pads are available on E-Bay). To operate the heater while the touch pad was out of commission I installed a manual switch between the heat contacts on the heater controller. Closing the switch causes the heater to permanently run if it has no thermostat. Once communication with the touch panel was restored we were able to try and find the intermittent heater fault.

Again I have been getting Fault Code 08 "Gas Interruption" however the heater was lighting OK and then going out after about a minute or so. In the end I found 2 distinct heater faults.

Fault 1 was the flame sensor where the weld between the wire and flame probe rod had broken but it was still touching. This meant it was sensing Flame OK and then later would go open with expansion as the temperature rose. I fixed this by replacing the Flame Probe with a new one sourced from Reece HVAC.

At this point I celebrated thinking it was fixed!

Fault 2 after the flame sensor issue was cleared the fault still persisted but slightly less often.
The heater was cycling 3 times to get going and then locking out, requiring a reset from the touch thermostat or heater controller board. Sometimes the heater would achieve a onging burn for a long period, and other times just locking out after 3 tries.

Careful observation of the flame, through the observation holes after it lit, showed correct flame sensing but as soon as the nominal 65C duct temperature was reached the combustion fan (modulates) throttles back too far and the flame goes out, the flame sensor switches off and gas valve is then closed. The pressure differential across the burner manafold controls the Gas flow rate so if the combustion fan goes too slow the flame goes out due to lack of gas.

On the control board there is a potentiometer marked "MIN GAS RATE" this needs to be tweaked clockwise until the burner remains lit when the nominal 60-65C duct temperature is reached. Don't turn it up too far or the heater may not throttle back enough and end up going out on overheat.

Once a stable flame is achieved when throttled, try the heater in the economy mode which uses a lower recirculating fan speed and check the flame still remains lit. My problem was most obvious in the Econ mode.

The tech that fixed the gas leak had to shut the main gas supply off so if he didn't bled the line to the furnace you may still have air in the line....... Go ahead and shut the furnace off and retry to start it again it takes a couple of trys to bled the air out through the pilot.... And if that doesn't work I would call the first tech and have him recheck it......that is assuming that you have an electronic ignition type furnace.

Can't light a vulcan heritage gas heater, the pilot light lights, but as soon as I try to lift my finger off the button to ignite the heater, the pilot flame always goes off.


Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

What you are experiencing is the lack of a signal from the thermocouple to the gas valve. I.e. the thermocouple is not passing heat information at all. This is caused by either a defective thermocouple, a dirty mating area where the thermocouple connects to the gas valve or... an improperly positioned thermocouple that is not "in the flame" with the pilot lit.

  • First make sure the FIRE end of the thermocouple is in the flame when lit. (reposition if necessay)
  • Next disconnect the thermocouple by unscrewing the fitting on the top of the gas valve. (No gas will come out) Clean the metal mating area as best you can and then re-install the thermocouple. Just a good snug fit. Once you feel it come snug add 15 degrees of tightening motion with a wrench.
Attempt to light the pilot... wait 45 seconds to 1 minute while holding the pilot button down before letting it up. If it stays lit.... GOOD JOB. If it goes out the next step is to replace the thermocouple. If after replacing the thermocouple it does not stay lit the remedy is to replace the gas valve. There are no short cuts and the sequence of repairs is just as I stated in order.

You can remove your old thermocouple and walk in to almost any appliance parts supply or Plumbing and heating supply to purchase the correct thermocouple without a part number. They will match it up with yours.

Can i get a new pilot light assembly for a vulcan cx 90 ducted heater


If you can not,do this,take a piece of 3/16 tubing,and cut it to fit over the pilot light,and make sure the tubing is cut long enough to extend into the flame of the pilot light,this will save you money,and time,most of the time the problem with the pilot light is,that it burns away over time,and does not stay into the flame .If this was helpful,please rate,thank you.

How many wires for the thermostat do you have? If you tell me I can help. The green flashing, instead of red, in my experience, means a thermostat problem.
