I have checked the hot and cold hoses, and the drain hose - found some pocket change- thought this would solve the problem but water keeps spilling out from the cylinder, and then I get the ob symbol.

The water does not drain , the washer sometimes spins and does a fine jobbut only occasionally. I have tried only putting in a small load this worked one time. I have cleaned out the drain lower right and...

Hi Karyn.

I understood that you already checked the drain filter at the front bottom.

If you haven't done it yet check also drain hose at the back. Make sure that setting is as from manual. it should be 33 inches, check also height, connection and check that is not kinked. If the drain hose is set incorrectly you get water siphoning back to the drain pump and machine does not drain. For settings see your owners manual or pages 9/10 of the service manual below.

If the drain hose is OK, then the drain pump and the control module must be tested.

Disconnect the drain pump and measure the resistance at the connector. Impedance must be between 140 and 200 Ohms. Replace the drain pump if it is faulty.
Check the voltage out from central control unit to drain pump when pump is energized. If there is not voltage, replace the central control unit.

Also have a look at the pressure switch. The pressure switch determines when to start/stop the drain pump and when to advance to rinse. The pressure switch is located in control assembly. Clean the hose connected to the pressure switch. The switch is difficult to test. Replace the switch if pump and volts at control unit are OK.

Here the part.

Ohms reading is done with power not connected. Testing with power on must be done by a trained person.

Here a service manual covering different models.

Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959KQ2 washing machine

I have this Washer also. It was the top of the line and still is. Its just marketed differently. Now any idiot can fix this... its easy!

Only two possible Solutions: Humming, not spinning, water still inside, slow and stopping, churning like its being forced, evil sounds, dirty clothes, longer times says 8 mins but takes 1/2 hour)

1) You need a new motor. Turn her face down (sideways). Take off the black plate 3 screws.Thats all you need to do. See the Motor on right ( the big motor with no hoses) Just order part number 9724551 or replacement motor if it fails this test.

Take off the rubber belt. Just slightly turn the wheel it will come off easily and gently slide off 1/4 of the way now turn it until shes off. Turn on the washing machine(dont worry)...test spin only 8 mins. See if the motor spins easily. It will go runt..runt..runt... and stop its 1000% the motor. Now if it spins good. Its 1000% the other motor (with water tubes). Thats it. You found the problem. Just make sure its only on spin cycle(lower left button 8 mins) The motor should spin non stop. If it stops ...ebay the motor.DONE you are good to go. Taking off the motor is only 2 bolts then turn the motor clockwise until you can just pull it out from the bottom. No need to take anything apart. Just turn the metal tabs until its free, thats it. Make sure you unplug the wire. Two tabs ears hold down and push in. Replace with new motor then turn sideways...put in 2 bolts ...snap in wiring box. done.

Tiny motor:
Hair is stuck so pull that one out and but only the replacement model. (DO NOT BUY THE SAME MODEL) WITH THE HOSES. You can on the big motor but not the little motor. If you have the one piece 2 hose plastic part..nothing you can do. Buy replacement that opens up so you can clean out the hairs each year. There a rubber wheel that must come off too. See the hairs stuck..remove and put back(only with new motor "PUMP" not motor. The pump is the plastic junk with two holes for water. Order replacement. DONE

Why this happened to YOU: Calypso was found defective by the courts. YOU SHOULD of RECEIVE a newer on free but statue is over so do what I teel you. They co claims they notified every owner but thats BS. Too late now. All they did was replace the pump and upgrade the motor for the newer models.

It really is a great machine but you must replace either the little PUMP with hoses(not the little motor) or the big motor. Check ebay its only 50 bucks delivered more or less.

DON'T YOU DARE THROW THIS OUT. Stainless Steel tubes cost big money and this baby has many electronic features but you need a powerful motor. I know this because I worked on them.

Once you have the new pump motor or the new larger motor (both in my case) you will have trouble free operation.

NOTE: belt driven motors are the top of the line. Todays **** is plastic driven driveshafts that cost 1 penny to make. STAY away from NON belt driven washing machines you will have a TERMINAL PROBLEM one that cant be fixed...unlike this machine.

Trust me its simple it takes one hour max. Just do what I say.

Good luck and hopefully see will last forever.

Calypso behaving badly

Did you remove the tub ring and wash plate?  A lot of times there will be lint and other foreign objects lodged in the drain opening between the tub and the pump.  You have to remove the wash plate in order to get to it, however.  The most common item found are the wire hoops from under support bras.  The wire make it's way between the tub and basket and gets lodged in the drain line.  Eventually lint and debris starts to collect and you end up with a long drain error.  Post back with comments and let me know if you've already done this.  If not, it might be worth the effort to take a look.  If you need instructions on how to get the tub ring and wash plate out, let me know.

Calypso - water goes straight to drain hose-not drum

the hose may still be filled from last cycle. try to put machine in final spin mode where all water from previous wash will be spun out the drain hose. once a siphon is started it can only be stopped by introducing air into the drain hose.
