I have a problem with my unit in that the screen goes blank and a blue line runs down the screen. The only way I can get it to go again is to unplug a battery and then turn it on. Sometimes it goes out again quite quickly, other times it will stay on. Any comments or solutions to this problem????

Please go to the Garmin website and update the internal software in your GPS unit. A new satellite was launched in 2008 and is causing problems once your unit locks onto it. In the meantime, you can go into setup and disable WAAS. That will fix your problem temporarily. Do the update and see if that fixes this problem. If it does, please come back and rate our solution.

There is a firmware upgrade from Garmin that appears to address this problem for units still running Version 3.2 or earlier. If your problem only occurs when WAAS is enabled, you might try upgrading. To find what firmware version you have, from the main menu: Setup, System, then select the (options) icon on the top row, to the left of the 'X'.
Due to a new satellite launched this year, the WAAS is affected. Disable the WAAS, go to Garmin and download the latest software version FOR THIS UNIT. Install, enable WAAS and you should be good to go.
The problem is that your software version needs updating. A recently added satellite creates a glitch in the older software. Go to the Garmin website, load WebUpdater if you haven't already done so, and the updated version (3.8) will automatically install to your Garmin unit. I had the same symptoms, they have now disappeared and my Etrex Vista is back to normal.
I have run into the same problem and it may be related to the WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) feature. Try disabling this feature (under MAIN MENU / Setup). I used this receiver overseas (Asia and Europe) last year for 35 days straight with no problems. During this time WAAS was disabled as none of these satellites are visible overseas. The problem occurred intermittently prior to the overseas trip, and has reoccurred after returning. I was running into the same problem this past weekend and noticed the screen blanking out (with the vertical line) shortly after differential corrections were applied to the GPS signals. I disabled the WAAS and let the receiver run for over an hour. The problem did not return. Hope this helps.
Yes, this problem has been caused by the launch of a new satellite earlier this year. As soon as your unit gets a fix from the new satellite, it causes this problem. Simple immediate fix: disable WAAS in the setup. Permanent fix: go to Garmin website and update your unit's software and it will fix this temporary problem.
