If the MUTE is right next to the TUNED, it means the FM is muting inter-station noise until you tune a station strong enough to produce good audio. This has nothing to do with speaker MUTING.
Find FM Mode (page 14) and change it to Mono. Then you will hear the noise between stations until you find one strong enough. Install an anenna (page 3) and you might get strong enough signals to return the mode to Auto.
Check on the front panel of this receiver for a speaker switch or button. If there is one there, which there usually is.. PUSH IT (or them) This problem has happened to the most knowledgeable professionals in the sound business. Give it a shot. If there is any sound coming from any speakers, it is not the speaker switch. Sometimes a frayed wire shorting out can shut down the sound on a receiver. It's a because of the protection circuit in it. There is a form of automatic muting on most FM receivers. If the station is too weak or the antenna is not connected or working properly, you can get silence for the unit. Hope this helps, Best, Mark
The Auto Muting mode mutes the audio output of the tuner if the station is not sufficciently strong to be accurately tuned. Otherwise you would hear all that interstation hash noise.
Press the FM Mode button to change it to Mono if you want to manually tune a hard-to-reach station. It will be in Mono.
AUTO MUTING Normally select this.
When a program is broadcast in stereo, you will hear stereo sound; when in monaural, you will hear monaural sound.
This mode is also useful to suppress static noise between stations. The AUTO MUTING indicator lights up on the display.
Sounds like you are pretty close with this one. If you select fm tuner do you get audio. If not you may have the speakers on the wrong a-b setting. Make sure the audio from your cable box is not muted or turned down.
