Question about Computers & Internet

I have my ethernet modum upstairs at the far end of the house and use netgear rangemax router. At the opposite end of the house I have my wireless laptop. I use an access point in the living room and I get a signal but it is always poor. Would adding a repeater closer to my laptop help bootst the signal?

Yes, adding a repeater closer to the laptop will repeat or boost the signal so you get a better signal. You can also try replacing the standard antennas with better ones.

Howdy. We are not connected in any way with Netgear, but I hear your frustration. Since you have only one ethernet plug,I wonder if you might try using the new netgear rangemax instead of the other netgear router rathern than with it. They suggest you use these with the rangemax:
"We recommend using this product with the RangeMax Next Wireless-N Adapters (WN511B, WN311B, WN121T"
Good luck with your situation, I'm rooting for you:)

How do i connect my netgear rangemax wireless router

You should have a manual/setup guide.
BUT, the basics of setting a wireless router are.

Connect an ethernet cable from your MODEM to the WAN port on the rear of the ROUTER.
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports (usually 4) to your computer.
You now log on to your router via your web browser, set your wireless security (using WPA2) choose your password.
Save and exit from the router setup, disconnect the ethernet cable from your computer to the router and try and connect wirelessly
Your support page is here, choose which version of the router you have and download your manual

Take the ethernet cable which is going from your Warner cable modem to your computer, and run it from your cable modem to the input connection of your router. Then take a second ethernet cable and run it from the router (ports 1, 2,3 or 4) to your computer. Log into your router's setup page (see your instruction manual), and set up all the passwords and wireless settings. Please read the instructions for specifics of your particular router.

Hi,

If you want to upgrade the firmware on the router then please do it on a hardwired windows computer. Firmware wont upload on the router through a MAC computer. I would suggest you to follow the steps below to configure settings on the router:

Scan for the wireless network on the wireless enabled computers and connect to the network.

Hope, this helps.

Connecting a router to a gateway

Sure, you just need to change the ip address of the Rangemax. Netgear usually uses 192.168.0.1 for their router ip addresses. Plug the ethernet cable from your PC into the Rangemax. Open a web browser and put 192.168.0.1 into the address bar. You should reach the home page of the Rangemax. Change it's ip address to 192.168.0.2 and save.

Run an ethernet cable from one of the four ports in your Netgear gateway to the internet in port on your Rangemax and all should be well.
