Question about Acer Aspire 3610 Notebook
The external volume control on a laptop consists of hitting the function key and the volume up or down at the same time, usually it will have an icon of a speaker on the key, try function page up or page down. Function/Mute will turn off all sound, which will be a speaker icon with an 'X' through it. Go to Control Panel/Sound and Audio and make sure 'Mute' is not checked, then hit the Audio tab and check 'Use only Default Devices'. If this is not a Media center PC it does not have an external volume control. Hit function and Mute to turn all sound back on. If your machine has all the right audio drivers installed it will come right back on, if not go to Windows update and find the drivers you need under custom/hardware.

You might want to look into one of two options... either an external sound card, or a keyboard that has mltimedia buttons on it.
If you go with the former, the Audigy 2 NX external sound card might be want you are looking for. It's small and has volume controls right on the top. Granted, it is overkill if you just want simple volume control. However, if you don't have a high-end sound card already, it could be a nice addition to your desk..?
