Brand new laptop and when switched on for the first time message pops up during setup. It says 'the computer restarted unexpectedly or encounted error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click ok to restarted the computer, and then restart the installation'
Have restarted the computer but the same message pops up every time, any idea?

Try reseating memory modules, see if nay change, if no, then try the modules individually, one may be bad.
Try running system in safe mode (F8 at boot) see if it will get past issue

Cry. Seriously, remove the drive and copy off of it any and all files that you want and need. Then format the unit and reinstall the operating system and programs from the backup disks that you have. No backup?
Now you are really ******* - see if you can get set from notebook manufacturer. If not check with your computer literate friends to see if any of them have OS installation disks.

It could be several things, if you are just starting the computer for the first time, it may have encountered an error on the installation media. Are you using a DVD or CD for the installation? Try cleaning it and retry. If this is the first time you have attempted it, retry.
If still fails use the emergency disk that comes with all asus machines.
Since you cant start it using your recovery disk, you need to bring it to a service center because the are going to take out the hard drisk and connect it with other computer so they can do the restoration or reformating
turn off the computer and disconnect the battery . wait like half an hour. put it back in you have to wait a few minutes for the battery to finish charging then turn it on . this should help. the menu will pop up after you type your password in .
Seems like the preinstalled image is corrupt or there is a hardware problem. Contact Acer for the correct procedure since this is a new system. I could offer alternate methods if you have the Windows install disc, but it is best to contact the manufacturer as soon as possible so it is on record.
Your windows installation CD might have become corrupt. Use a fresh CD and enter into BIOS settings to set Default Settings before installation.

I presume you are installing from the CD? Can you select to not boot from CD, and get to a DOS prompt, and then format C: drive? You need to delete the failed installation and start again.
