The outside of our crock pot gets hot. Don't remember if it did this when new?

My Rival crock pot is also heating up on the outside and bottom. It has such a short cord that I use it on the counter top. It is now getting so hot that I am afraid of starting a fire.

I have the same crock pot and mine gets hot too. but what I do not like is that my cord is getting hot, and easier to bend from the heat. My mother has the exact same crock pot and her crock pot is hot, but the cord is not near as hot as mine, so I am getting a new one.

Outside of crockpot gets very hot and countertop is extremely hot after cooking for a couple of hours

This sounds normal. put the unit on something to protect counter. It is very difficult to heat long term, without the unit becoming quite hot.

Had a large crockpot, outside got reeeeely hot so I junked it but kept the liner (has a plastic lid). Wondering if I can use the liner in an oven, and/or range top (gas or electric). Anyone know? Bottom...

Problem solved 1/25/10: went to www.crock-pot.com/customerservice and started reading. Stoneware liners are usable in ovens and microwaves (up to 400 deg), and range tops. It didn't say to, but I plan to put a wire grid (as used for some double-boilers) to avoid direct heat.

Extra metal piece in base

I have a west bend crockery cooker, model 84316. It was given as a gift. My wife has tried to use it 3 times and each time the outside becomes to hot to touch, while the contents of the removable crock gets only luke warm. I also noticed the bottom of the cooker has turned brown from excess heat, looks like a possible fire hazzard. Does anyone have this problem, is there a recall on this product.

Base gets hot

Yes, it is normal. Especially on "high". My crockpot heats my kitchen when in use.

Rival crock pot

Yes, it's not unusual for the outside to be too hot to touch. A slow cooker won't get as hot as a bare burner on the stove, but it still gets hot enough to cook meat. The outside has a bit of insulation, but it still may get hot enough to cause pain, melt a bread bag, etc. Be sure and place it where no one will accidentally touch it.

Stay or go slow cooker

most slow cookers have a flexible element in the bottom of the cooker. the porcelain "pot" fits into the shell or outside of the cooker. heat rises so naturally the outside of the pot will heat up after the pot and anything in it heats up. (radiated heat) some have insulation around the inside of the shell to slow down the heat convection but will heat up eventually. that's why they all have phenolic handles. if they didn't heat up then would you need handles?

Outside of Crock Pot Extremely Hot....Is This Normal?

This is not normal. Thermal switch is not functioning correctly. Wiring inside not easy to replace. Crock pots cause a lot of home fires. Cheaper to simply buy a new one.
