Microwave comes on by itself in middle of night

Hi, we have had our microwave for about 2 years and every once in a while it would come on by itself during the day. Last night I heard it running at 4 am and when I got to it it had been running a really long time because it was smelling extremely hot. Any suggestions. We are afraid to leave it plugged in now. Thanks

My Magic Chef microwave came on by itself yesterday afternoon. I hit the "cancel" button but it turned on again. After three times, I let it count down the time and when it beeped and displayed "end" it completely powered off. It stayed off for 5 minutes or so and then came back on and I had to reset the clock. It never did that before although I have seen it shut off by itself when I had something in it. It is fairly new, maybe 5 or 6 months old.

My Magic Chef microwave started doing this today! I was cooking on my stove and when the timer went off I couldn't turn it off. It wouldn't respond to any buttons. I finally unplugged it. Then, once I plugged it back in it just keeps starting itself.

I can't have it plugged in at all. That is a SCARY problem! I am hoping to find a solution. I got the microwave 9 months ago and it has only been installed for about 7 months.

I have a little different problem. When we attempt to cook popcorn, we press the popcorn button all goes well for about 1minute then the microwave completely shuts off. It then takes up to 20 minutes for it to come back to life!!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem. My MW is about a year old and just started coming on by itself. I now have to unplug it after each use. Otherwise it functions normally. When it turns itself on, it can only be turned off by unplugging and letting it sit for a while before plugging it back in.

MY MCO160UW started to turn itself on yesterday. The first tim ethat it occured we believed that it was a fluke- perhaps I had forgot to clear the cook timer and for some reason it turned on. Now, the same thing has happened two more times in less that 24 hours. We have had to unplug the unit for fear of it causing a fire and have submitted a service request to Magic Chef. However, when we initially purchased the units our calls for service were never answered so I don't know how much help thay will be.

I am having the same problem with a 9 month old mco160uw. Scary, isn't it.

  • gOrange Nov 18, 2008

Ditto. The microwave will automatically come on. It seems to be the 3.5 oz popcorn auto setting. No other buttons will respond.

The MCO160UW in the new house we purchased started turning itself on randomly a few days ago.  Sometimes if you let it complete the cycle, it will start working normally, other times the control panel will be completely unresponsive, and it will be stuck in whatever mode it is in, and the only way to reset it is to cut the power.

This unit was replaced in July 2008 when the original unit, purchased in Jan 2008 failed. (I don't know if it was the same problem, as the piror homeowners had the unit replaced.)

We are having the same issue. We purchased the microwave in Jan 08 and by November 08 started having issues. Panel wouldn't work, microwave wouldn't come on, then would come on by itself. This seems to be a great firehazard and a risk no one should have to make just owning a microwave. Any solutions, besides unplugging and getting a new one.

I am so happy to hear that many people are experiencing the same problem with this microwave. Our turned on by itself last night and has not stopped turning on independent of our actions since the first incident, it has been over twenty four hours now. We cut the power and have tried everything we know. These microwaves are clearly faulty. This one is less than a year old and rarely used. M. of Oregon

We have the same problem - auto turn-on, non-functioning keys...
I called Magic Chef and they gave me another number to call:
I called, told the rep about our possessed microwave, and they said someone will be calling to schedule a repair visit. We bought the microwave around May '08 and it is still under warranty.
Call this number and get it fixed. It is a safety problem and Magic Chef should take care of it for you.

It could be a shorted switch. that is the only logical solution that i could think of for your problem. try replacing the push button switch assembly. i hope i was able to help.

This absolutely is a fire hazard.

Until it is fixed, you are right to either unplug it or simply leave the door open when you;re not using it.

You have a failed membrane keypad.

Although extremely rare, I have seen ovens where insects were walking on the back side of a control panel, and causing problems. Could also just be some sort of electronic failure.

Microwave starts by itself

Likely a microprocessor/control panel issue. Microwave ovens that sit over ranges often have electronic failures due to heat, humidity, and grease, from the range below, which come into contact with their main circuit boards.

After 5 years of service, there could have been a magnetron failure but the door interlock (latch) could have failed which would acccount for the turntable failure.

New unit used 3 days. Microwave beeps and screen goes to menu, or set time screen. Sometimes changes the date all by itself. Does this in the middle of the night all night long.

I advice you to contact service if it has guarantee. This seems to be a psychological problem about your oven(!). Technical person need to do an electronic research surgery on its board to see if there is any wrong thing.

There really shouldn't be a correlation between the metal ring in the oven cavity and the erratic operation of the control board. Although it might seem suspicious, what happens inside the oven cavity stays in the oven cavity.

Have a new Emerson MW9710W microwave. Had it

My daughter is having the same problem as you are having. Thing is we bought it for her new. She had not used it at all for a year. They finally bought a house, started using it in May. It is now doing the exact things yours is doing. Is there some kind of recall notice on these microwaves or what is wrong and how do we fix it?

My kenmore 62349 microwave set itself on fire in the middle of the night, why?

I Googled 721.62349202 recall and got no hits.

I am currently working with some folks investigating this type of dangerous microwave issue.

Would you contact me directly?

In the meantime, please unplug the oven or at least leave the door open when it is not in use.

If you have taken it out of service, please keep it, and store it in a protected area to preserve it as is.

Starting by itself

Time for a service call. Should not turn on by itself at any cause. Circuit board is my guess. May be cheaper/easier to get new microwave. My first one lasted about 15 yrs--and the circuit board (touchpad) died. Bought new microwave oven.
