My agitator does not turn while going thruthe wwash cycle. I took it out and it appears that the feet or arms inside are not coming out to engage the teeth of the agitator.

Having the same problem...thanks for the info on getting the parts. However, I need to know how to remove the top part of the agitator (spiral piece) to fix it. Is there a diagram somewhere that may help.

My agitator barely turns. It spins nicely but won't do regular washing. When I do my laundry my house starts to smell like laundry soap. Why is that?

Those are called "agitator dogs". They do become worn with age and require replacement. Go to and type in you model number. The part should be located under the "Agitator" heading on the next page. A package of them should cost less than $10. This is an easy repair and should restore your agitator to working condition. If you require further assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

PS If you do not wish top purchase on line, use the part number provided on the sears website and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer.

Washing machine stuck between wash and rinse.

first remove agitator by taking top of agitator off and putting your hand down the centre of it and unscrewing the wingnut holding the agitator to the main drive shaft. once the nut is loose pull the agitator out and bail the water out by hand using a pot or jug. once the bowl is empty u can look underneath. to the right hand side front of machine u will see a red or black fan that is attached to the pump. turn the fan clockwise and then anti clockwise and hopefully that will unjam the pump. the fan should turn freely. then put machine back on its feet.refit agitator. turn on unit select spin and it should start draining.if it doesnt reply back and i will help u more. please turn off power to unit b4 u work on it. good luck

Kenmore 80 Model #11020802990 Won't Spin!!

i think you have a basket drive tube problem, what happened to mine was the thrust washer had ground off the bottom of my tube, the clip that holds the brake release arm fell off,the arm fell down breaking the 2 little pins on it, without that arm on the tube it won't release the brake allowing the basket to spin, you would have to remove the tranny to see if there is a problem there,,,,,also the top of the tube there is 2 notches that line up in your drive block, could be broken there,,,,you would have to remove the agitator to check there!

Washing machine operates sporadially

What made you replace the motor? Sounds also like a transmission problem. You motor reversing in spin but gears for agitate stripped in gearbox. Double check motor/coupling alignment. Pull the motor back off and turn the gearbox drive shaft both directions. One direction makes the basket turn, the other direction makes the agitator turn. If the agitator does not move, the gear case is bad.

A piece of clothing is stuck underneath the agitator! It won't turn during the wash cycle. The spin cycle still works. How do I disconnect the agitator, so I can remove the piece of clothing?

remove the agitator by first taking off the softner dispenser at the top of the agitator and then look down inside. inside you will see a half inch head bold. remove bolt and lift agitator out.

Whirlpool Toploader won't spin with a heavy load.

Do you mean it won't spin or won't agitate? Agitate means that the post in the middle (agitator) turns back and forth. It is very common for the agitator to stop working properly, especially if you normally do large loads.

Inside the agitator are little nylon feet called dogs. They grip the inside of the agitator and work like a centrifugal clutch, and they wear out every couple of years. They are normally the reason the machine won't agitate. I have had my washer for less than 4 years and I just replaced the dogs for the second time.

If you are handy with some simple tools, you can probably do this. If not, it should not cost too much to repair, and will be even cheaper if you remove the agitator and bring it with you to the repair shop. They did not even charge me the first time the dogs went because it took about 10 minutes to fix and I brought the agitator to them.

To replace the dogs, go to your local repair shop and tell them you need a set of agitator dogs for your washer. I paid $10 for them.

Pull off the fabric softener dispenser top and assembley. It just pulls out. There is a plastic disk with a handle on it. Pull this out and you will see a bolt. I believe it is an 11mm. You will need a couple of extensions to reach it. Remove this bolt by turning counter clockwise and the agitator will pick strait up. Place the agitator on the floor and press down on the base with your feet. If you look down into the agitator you will will see four small holes in a circular pattern. These holes have small plastic prongs coming through them. Using a screwdriver, gently press down on these prongs one at a time while pulling up (gently) on the agitator. This will release the agitator post from the base.

From the underside of the agitator post you can see the dog assembly. It pulls out easily. Pay close attention to how the dogs come out and put the replacements back in the same way. I repeat, PAY ATTENTION. It is a simple assembly process, but if you don't watch closely how it comes apart you may have a hard time putting it back together.

When you finish replacing the dogs, place the top of the agitator back on the base. Line up the pastic tabs with the holes (that you removed using the screwdriver) and carefully press down until the tabs snap through. If the tabs are not lined up with the holes, they will break off and that will be bad.

Place the agitator back in the washer, bolt it down, replace the plastic cover and fabric softener dispenser. It should be good to go. Do a trial run without clothes. Just push down on the top of agitator while it is in the agitation cycle. It should agitate correctly now.

My whirlpool top loader won't agitate.

Sounds like what you have is a dual agitator, bottom moves back and forth in wash, top acts like a screw pulling clothes down to the bottom of the tub. If so, the agitator dogs are bad, to get to them, pop off the cap on top of the agitator, then reach down inside and pull up a cap in there, then use a socket (I forget the size) and a long extension to unbolt the agitator and pull it out, the dogs are located between the top and bottom sections. They are slightly curved rubbery plastic pieces, 4 total. About an 1 1/2" or so long, one end fits into a hole on the inner part of the agitator and the other end is ribbed to catch the outer part of the agitator during the wash stroke.
