Maxtor External HD - The device cannot start. (Code 10)

Maxtor 3200 X HD

I've had it over a year and now it won't show in my drives. The PC recognizes it, but says there was an error installing the device. I have tried power cycling the device and rebooting the PC many times. I've gone to the device manager and uninstalled and reinstalled the device. Have tried updating drivers. The exact error it keeps coming up with when going to device manager is "The device cannot start. (Code 10)".

I feel nauseous - there is a lot of stuff on there. I am having the very same problem. I have done everything that R2D2ME2 has done and am very frustrated. I hope you can help. Code 20 also

This is getting so frustrating. Almost my entire drive is full, and I can't access any of the information. I truly do hope my maxtor device isn't dead. If anyone has a solution, please help. I'm almost to the point that I will have to re-format my hard drive to see if that works..... HELP!

I had a similar problem with my pc( OS=XP SP2) with the same external drive model. I was able to solve it by downloading and installing WindowsXP-KB908673-x86-ENU Hotfix Package from Microsoft Corporation. I hope it works for you.

Start "Device Manager".

Then, connect the external USB device.

Even though my Maxtor external hd is plugged in, the icon shows that it is disabled, any clues?

Is there an enable option when you right click the icon? If you're using Windows, go to Device manager and check if you can enable it from there.

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.

What OS are you using? Windows 98SE does not always recognize exterrnal hard drives. Try the external HD on a computer running Windows XP and see if that works. If it works on WinXP and not Win98SE or possibly WinME the External HD is good.

Hi, Normally the steps would be: 1. In your PC, in the System Tray, click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" and then on the "Safely Remove USB Mass Storage Device-Drive(?); 2. Unplug USB cable; 3. Power down external device. Hope this be of some help/idea. Good luck and kind regards.
