Black ink does not dispense-cleaning cycle has no effect
My friend has lost black printing which is primarily his use. I supplied him with an extra cartridge since we refilled the original so many times, that it was a good idea to have a extra. The 3 colors work fine, I suspect the supply to the print head has clogged, but what cleans it out?

Purging Procedure - If you have just installed a new archival or Quadtone cartridge you must purge the Epson print head of all of the old, non-archival, ink before you can begin to print with the full archival effect. The print heads in the Epson 200/400/440/500/600/640/740/800/850/860/900/1160/1520/Photo/Photo 700/Photo EX/Photo 750/Photo 1200 printers hold about 3 to 5 pages worth of ink. Always run a Nozzle check before printing. Even if you get a perfect nozzle check on your first try after putting in a new cartridge, run at least one or two head cleaning cycles. This will prevent any excess ink from over filling the print head. After the cleaning cycles, use the purging test patterns below to purge your system of the old ink. After printing about 5 (8.5x11) pages of this pattern, 98% of the old ink will be gone. The rest will come out slowly and may take as many as 20 or more pages, but at the 98% point you will see good results. If you have an Epson 3000, 5000 or 9000. See below
Run a head cleaning cycle by pressing ink button for 3 seconds or longer. Try printing after 3 cycles, if getting blank pages still. Nozzles are clog, better get a new one than having it fix, more cost effective.
You probably have a plugged print head or the black ink feed is plugged.
Depending on how bad it is you may find it easier or even cheaper to replace the printer.
If this is a ink caused problem you stand a chance of fixing it if you are patient but you might go through half an ink cartridge to get it working, If it is stubborn it can take 20 or 30 cleaning cycles before you see any black. You can try using household vinegar (dissolves the dried ink) on a qtip or lint free paper towel to try to clean the print head. To do this you remove the ink cartridge and very gently rub the towel with the vinegar on the print head. This might require you to move the print head to one side so you can see the actual print area (where the ink comes out). Keep doing this until the towel starts to come clean ie not as much ink coming off. Then run a few print cycles and if this works your printer will print as good as the first day you had it.
The next stage would require filling a old clean ink cartridge with vinegar and running cleaning cycles. Usually can be pretty messy and you should rethink buying a new printer but will really clean things out.
It is also possible that the print head has picked up clay or paper lint from the paper and this has hardened like a cement. That means replacement.
actually, its not. the reason is, there is a small resovoire (sp?) in the ink cartridges. if you continue to print, the nozzles will clog up, and can cause all the nozzles not to work. even when you do just black, the printer has to clean at times all the nozzles and if your nozzles are empty, air will go into the deep and dry up the excess ink.
if you are going to do primarily black prints, you should get a black and white laser for those uses only.
Much as I'd love to say that Epson are being a bunch of "robbing gits" as you put it, in this instance they are actually helping protect your investment.
If the printer was allowed to print without a valid ink supply on one of the ink types it would soon fill the printhead with either foam or air. Either promotes clogging.
Now, whilst you might be certain that you're using just black, the printer may be programmed to use a small amount of the other colours (depends on the settings) so common sense often needs dispensing with.
It's a pain in the backside, granted but it is intended to stop you from having much bigger issues later on.
Appreciate that's not a "fix" but hopefully it explains why you're in the bind you are.
My advice would be to purchase a cheap mono laser, especially if your printing it primarily of black text type... It's cheaper and you don't have to worry about consumables you don't use.
Have a real good cleanup of the ink that was (presumably) leaking from the old black cartridge. Remove the cartridges from the cartridge carrier and use kitchen paper towel to soak up any ink in the bottom. Give the cartridge outlet holes a dab on the towel as well. Replace the cartridges promptly.
Turn the printer on, and as soon as the print head moves, pull the power cord out of the back. You should now be able to (carefully) move the print head by hand. Place a layer of paper towel on the printer track, and move the print head across it to mop up any surplus ink. Move the print head across to the left out of the way and use kitchen towel to mop up surplus ink in the Print Head parking area.
Now turn the printer on and carry out a cleaning cycle (right click the little printer icon in the bottom right corner of the screen and select clean). Now run a nozzle check (right click the little printer icon in the bottom right corner of the screen and select nozzle check). Are there any extra black lines in evidence now? If so, try another 1 or 2 cleaning cycles and nozzle check. Black lines gone now?

Your Brother machine is designed to stop ALL printing operations (printing from the pc, printing received faxes and printing copies or reports) when any of the ink cartridges are empty. This is to ensure the life of the print head and maintain premium print quality. If the unit were to continue printing, print jobs and cleaning cycles would suction air from the dry cartridge and damage the printhead. Even if you print in black only or change the print settings to MONO or GRAYSCALE to avoid printing in color, the programmed cleaning cycles would still suction the dry cartridge, because they are programmed to clean ALL the ink nozzles.
The only way to continue printing is to replace the empty ink cartridge or cartridges.
While memory is available, black and white faxes will continue to be received into memory. If a color fax is being received, the Brother machines HANDSHAKE will request the fax be sent as black and white fax.
All faxes received into memory will automatically print once the ink cartridge is replaced.
NOTE: Brother strongly recommends that customers do not use generic ink or refill their Brother ink cartridges. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability since the ink formulation in genuine Brother ink cartridges prevent smearing and clogging of the print head. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that was caused by the use of unauthorized third party ink and/or cartridges.
Have you tried a cleaning cycle? If not, try one (right click the little printer icon in the bottom right corner of the screen and select head clean). Now run a nozzle check (right click the little printer icon in the bottom right corner of the screen and select nozzle check). Is there any sign of ink on the paper. Try up to three cleaning cycles. If ink is now flowing, but not yet perfectly, don't carry out any more cleaning cycles. Just leave the printer for 24 hours (to allow any air in the print head to disperse). Then repeat the cleaning cycle/wait process. It may take a while to restore a perfect nozzle check print.
If these actions produce no positive results, or if you have already done lots of head cleans with no result, and you're sure you have a good ink cartridge properly installed, then you can try soaking the print heads for 24 hours (or more), as follows. Turn the printer on, and as soon as the print head moves pull the power cord out of the back, or turn the printer off at the mains. You may now carefully move the print head by hand over to the left hand side out of the way.
Look inside the print head parking area on the right and you will see a rubber cup that comes up to cover the print nozzles when the head is parked (to stop it drying out). Use a syringe or dropper to fill this cup with head cleaning fluid or distilled water. DO NOT USE TAP WATER. Carefully push the print head fully into its parking position so that the cup full of fluid comes up over the print head. Leave this for at least 24 hours, then try a head clean again. Repeat this process again if necessary.
If still nothing, it looks like you may have a failed cyan print nozzle I'm afraid, or some other internal problem. This will require checkout by a Technician. Make sure you compare the cost of repair with the cost of a new printer!
Check in the printer utilities and make sure that it is not set to "draft" mode. Also may want to clean the area in the printer where the business end of the ink cartridge rests. Using the "head cleaning" feature doesn't always work completely. Go to your local pharmacy and ask the druggist for Lab Swabs. They are longer than a Q-Tip and only have cotton at one end. You will need the extra length to reach where you need to clean. Use isopropyl alcohol and gently rub the effected area. See if this helps. also may want to try uninstalling the printer drivers completely and reinstalling them. This works in a lot of cases. There are more problems with printers than any other component in a computer system.
