I downloaded a free map upgrade for nuvi 250w. I didn't realise that I'd need an sd card. Now I seem to have lost some european maps. Can I retrieve them?

The problem with trying to put the full map of Europe on the 250 is that it doesn't have enough storage space. You can download the complete map however to your computer. The option to download again is available for approx 30 days. When it's on your computer you can select which maps you want to install to the satnav and install the complete map, if you want, to an SD card. You need a 4 Gb SD card to hold the complete map. To download the map again, to your computer, log into myGarmin. Click on the myMaps tab at the top of the screen. There you'll see the map you downloaded. Under the map name you'll see the word "Details" in blue. Click on "Details" and it will take you to a screen where you have the option to download the map again. When you go to download the map it will by default select your satnav as the destination. Change it to your computer so you get the whole map and you can add or remove maps whenever you want.

You can get more details of how to download the map to your computer at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps

No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing

A lot of people have looked for solutions to the message "No detailed maps that support routing" which can appear on Garmin Nuvi satnavs.

This solution can also be used when the message doesn't appear but no maps are loaded. When no maps are loaded try the instructions in paragraph 5 below Selecting Maps on your Garmin Satnav

If that doesn't solve your problem the maps may be locked. In this case return to paragraph 2 below and follow the instructions to the end

(This solution is for both PC and MAC users. Follow the instructions only for whichever you use).

The "No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing" message may appear on your Garmin nuvi satnav for the following reasons:
  • The Satnav is missing it's unlock code
  • The maps on the Satnav have been disabled
1. To determine the cause of the message, touch the screen until the message "No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing" disappears.
  • If you see a "Can't Unlock Maps" message following this, remove any microSD / SD cards in the device and follow the instructions below for Retrieving your unlock codes followed by the instructions for Creating an unlock file
  • If you do not get the Can't Unlock Maps message then skip to Paragraph 5. below Selecting Maps on your Garmin Satnav
2. To retrieve unlock codes you need to have your satnav registered with garmin. If you haven't already registered it, connect the satnav to your computer and go to www.garmin.com. Select your country from the dropdown list and click "Register your garmin device". Follow the prompts. You'll be asked to create a username and password. Keep them safe. You'll need them anytime you need to update your maps or solve problems in the future.

3. Retrieving your unlock codes:
  • Log into your myGarmin account
  • Select Manage Maps
  • Select Details

  • The unlock code is located under the Installed Maps.
Creating an unlock code file for PC:
  • Plug your Garmin device into the USB port
  • Double-Click on My Computer or Computer located on the desktop
  • Right-Click on the Garmin or nuvi drive
  • Click Explore
  • Double-Click on the Garmin folder
  • Right-Click in a blank space in this window
  • Move your mouse over the word New
  • Select Text Document
  • Press Enter / Return on your keyboard
  • Double-Click on the New Text Document. This will open the New Text Document in a window called Notepad
  • Type the unlock code that is listed in the Manage Maps section of your myGarmin account in all upper-case letters with no spaces
  • Select File
  • Select Save As
  • Change the Save As Type to All Files
  • Type gmapprom.unl in all lower-case letters for the File name
  • Select Save
  • Close the Notepad window
  • Delete the New Text Document file

  • Disconnect the Satnav from your computer
Creating an unlock code file for Mac:
  • Open the TextEdit application located in the Applications folder on the Mac HD
  • Click Format
  • Select Make Plain Text
  • Type in the unlock code that you retrieved from your mygarmin account. The unlock code should be in all capital letters and with no dashes.
  • Click Save As and name the file as gmapprom.unl (Note: Be sure to uncheck the box If no extension is provided, use .txt)

  • Copy the gmapprom.unl file to the GARMIN folder on your device. (Note: Save the file directly to the Garmin mass-storage device if connected)
4. If you have a second maps you may also need to unlock it e.g. if the first map is USA and second is EUROPE this may also need to be unlocked
  • Plug your Garmin device into the USB port
  • Double-Click on My Computer or Computer located on the desktop
  • Right-Click on the Garmin or nuvi drive

  • Double-Click on the Garmin folder

  • Select File
  • Select Save As

  • Type gmapprom1.unl in all lower-case letters for the File name
  • Select Save
  • Close the Notepad window

I attached my Nuvi 255W gps to my computer to register it and purchase new maps since mine were out of date. I downloaded the new software update after which the unit upon booting up said "no detailed...

When you went to TOOLS did you press SETTINGS and then MAPS and at the bottom of the screen MAP INFO.

When you press map info if the maps are still installed they should appear there. If there's not a tick beside the map name then it's unselected. Pressing the map name gets it selected again and could solve the problelm.

If you do need to download the maps again it may be possible, depending on how long it's been since they were downloaded or updated. (Usually it's possible for around 6 months after they were originally downloaded.)

  • Go to www.garmin.com and click the myGarmin tab at the top of the page. Log in using your username and password.
  • Click on the myMaps tab at the top of the screen and you should see your maps displayed.
  • Under your latest update you should see in blue writing a link called DETAILS
  • Click on the link and then at the next screen click on DOWNLOAD AGAIN
When you're following the prompts you'll come to one which gives you the option to download to the Satnav, Satnav and computer or Computer. Select Computer or satnav and computer. Then if you have a problem again with the map it will be easier to install it from your computer. You can find more details on installing from your computer and indeed all about updating your map at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps

If you find that your map cannot be downloaded again buying a new update, if there's one available should solve the problem.

If you find that your map is locked you can get information on unlocking it at http://www.fixya.com/support/r6197735-no_detailed_maps_found_support_routing

If you have favourites saved to your satnav it's a good idea to back them up to your computer just in case you lose them. Details of how to do this are at http://www.fixya.com/support/r8422587-backup_restore_favourites_garmin_nuvi

Why if you buy a garmin at game you have to pay R500 at trapers to up date it for you is there no way that i can update it on the internet i feel if you buy it that the soft ware much be corect and not...

If you bought the satnav new then you should be entitled to a free update from www.garmin.com. Garmin claim that if a new map comes out within 60 days of the first time your satnav acquires a satellite connection you can update it free from their website. Details on how to register and update your satnav can be found at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps

Note: When you register the satnav log in to myGarmin and click on myMaps. The map on your satnav should be shown. If there's an update available it will be shown beside the map name. When you click on GET UPDATE it will let you know if it's free or has to be paid for.

Garmin nuvi 1300 Query

Usually they come preloaded with some maps and you purchase additional ones. Check the manual that came with it or the box and that should tell you which ones it has. Generally speaking a basic unit bought in the UK will come with UK & Ireland preloaded, more expensive unit may have UK, Ireland & Europe and the most expensive may have all three plus USA. It's unlikely you will have 'lost' your USA map. The unit should have a 'drop down' menu which allows you to choose which map to load. Hope this helps!
