Question about Nikon D40x Digital Camera
I was quated £250 to replace a buckled shutter unit can this be done any cheaper or can i replace it myself
More than likely, you can't do it yourself since if you were capable of replacing a buckled shutter, .... you wouldn't be asking if you could replace a buckled shutter.
Your shutter has buckled because of either extreme amounts of dirt and dust have forced the shutter locked open or closed, or there is a damaged servo and replacing the whole unit will replace the damaged servo or servo motor.
You could probably find a replacement shutter unit, but if you aren't comfortable disassembling a digital Nikon camera body then you're more than likely to create more damage while disassembling it and assuming you reassemble it properly..... it may not be to tolerances and you'll have new sets of issues.
Working on an SLR's shutter mechanism is similar to working on mechanical watch, just because it looks like you reassembled it --you may not have done so to standards and it won't work properly until a qualified craftsman repairs it and any other problems you created.
