Plz read the article in the website below http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/inkjet/50418#1 then you have to open your printer and take out the ink pad which will be below the cartridge resting place then wash and dried it and put it back

I experienced the same problem with my i990. Tried everything software-wise, nothing worked. The printhead was not even detected by the printer. I then took it out (remove ink tanks- then open grey lever and simply lift out the printhead) I cleaned the copper electrical contacts at the back with contact spray or penetrating oil on a kleenex tissue and the refitted everything. It works as new.
it is not possible for you it is the problem mantainence wast tank full it mean when we print then chack cartridge is automacily clean then some ink fall under pad this pad is full ink then machine say ink absorber tank is full
you go to aservice centre only support printer canon. Thy clean wast tank and reset your printer
Use a Q-tip and a little water to wipe the wiper assembly on the right side of your machine. Unplug the printer when the carts are in the middle and look to the right with a flashlight. The wipers are supposed to wipe excess ink from the bottom of the printhead.
I am getting a Service error code 5200 on my i990 printer with the message, Cancel printing and turn the printer off and then back on. If this doesn't clear the error, see the printer manual for more detail. The manual dosen't help. Can you!
