Just looked up the 1998 Legacy, and the all wheel drive is a constant drive system, so if you don't have any drive to the rear, there is no electrical switches or solenoids to turn the rear drive on or off the system is all mechanical, so you need to take a good look at the drive shaft going to the rear wheels, Jack the car up all 4 wheels and install jack stands under all four lower a-frames then have some one start the car and put the trans. in gear and watch the rear drive shaft to see if it is turning, if it is not you will have to have the trans-axle checked out for a bad rear drive gear, if the drive shaft is turning but the rear wheels are not you will have to have the rear differential checked for a broken ring or pinion gear, but what you may find is that the drive shaft may have a broken u-joint and that you can fix yourself, pay very close attention to were the drive shaft attaches to the trans-axle and the differential.......i hope this helps let me know if there is any thing i can help you further with.

98 forester awd rear wheels not engaging runs fine other wise drive shafts, axles all in good shape no noises in drive train. no codes,no check engine light on

Just a thought, Check under bonnett on passenger side is a fuse that when installed dis-engages the rear drive. Remove the fuse to engage the rear drive. Sometimes people see the open fuse holder and fill the slot thinking it is missing. Truth is it is only for short towing. Good luck and have a great day.

What does the " Power " light on the dash indicate when it is lit on my Forester 2.0 Turbo S auto ? The manual doesn`t mention it !

Do you have a switch (usually a push button) on or near your shifter labeled "Power" or "Performance"? Some cars have a button that can turn on a different shift program for the transmission, usually holding gears longer and firming up shifts. Once you locate this button press it again and the light should turn off.

Grinding in and out of 4 wheel drive

You say 'new' truck, 09? or new used? I have had 3 Fords, 3 w/ manual trans. case, if you go into 4x4 Low range, you must come to a complete stop before shifting the trans. case to 4x4 mode, and I always put trans (automatic) in neutral before slipping into 4x4, it engages smoothly, no grinding. 4x4 high range can be put in while moving, but I would let off the gas pedal, shift to 4x4 high range, then resume accelerating. If there is any grinding going on doing it as above, something isn't right. Check the trans. case fluid level also, to make sure that's not an issue.

1998 VW Cabrio loud humming from what sounds like the transaxle

Have you checked that the noise is not tyre noise?
Interchange the wheels front to rear (or left to right) to see if it has any effect on the noise.

Only do the test below if the car is securely chocked so as not to move, take great care not to contact moving parts!
Securely jack both the car drivewheels off the ground, then 'drive' the vehicle through through the problem drive speed/gears while listening for the noise. If the noise occurs under these circumstances you may be able to further localise the source by listening (very carefully!)with a short hose pipe held to the ear.
