    Is hard to know without some tests.

    It may be a BIOS problem, a defective hardware, but like i said you need to do some tests.

    Did you updated your BIOS before this happend ?

    Have you Installed a new hardware ?

Why my window 8.1 keep saying when"missing operating system" when i connect my toshiba external hard drive ?

sounds like you need to set up your boot drive in your start up. If you cannot find that, then it needs to be changed in the bios. you usually need to push repeatedly the delete button or the f2 key. the screen should tll you at the bottom of the screen which key to push to go to the boot drive menu or the bios menu. Be very careful in the bios setup menu, only change the boot drive.

Unistall windows 8 pro

You have to install another operating system
Restart your computer during the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup usually the Delete or F2 key

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS then using the arrow keys scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

Note this will erase you operating system you will have to have an operating system disk to load it onto you hard drive or create a partition to load another operating system

Note after you have loaded the operating system you should go back and change the first boot device to failsafe or optimised defaults after windows has loaded

your computer will automatically restart it might restart 2 times one to finish the installation
the next will be because the operating system is loaded and will boot from your cd

Formatting a hard drive to erase its contents does not mean the files are necessarily gone forever. Using data-recovery software, someone still could retrieve sensitive data and files from your hard drive even after you've formatted it. Instead of simply formatting your hard drive, use disc-cleaning software to permanently erase its contents. Disc-cleaning programs work by repeatedly overwriting the contents of a hard drive with random data patterns, making it virtually impossible to recover the original files. Download and install the freeware program Active@ KillDisk (see Below). Click the Windows "Start" button and select KillDisk from the "All Programs" list. Click the check box next to the hard drive you want to erase in the "System Local Disks" menu. Press the "Kill" button. Select the erasing method you want to use from the "Erase Method" drop-down menu. Active@ recommends using the "US DoD 5220.22-M" method. Click "Start" to begin erasing the hard drive. Download and install the freeware program Hard Drive Eraser (see Below). Click the Windows "Start" button and select Hard Drive Eraser from the "All Programs" list. Check the radio button next to the hard drive you want to erase under "Select Drive to Erase." Select the erasing method you want to use from the "Shredding Scheme" drop-down menu. The developers of Hard Drive Eraser recommend "DoD 5220-22 M" Press the "Start" button to begin erasing the hard drive. Download and install Iolo DriverScrubber (see Below). Click the "Windows" Start button, "All Programs" and then the DriverScrubber program icon. Click "Wipe all contents of a drive," and then click "3.5-Inch Floppy Disk." Insert a blank floppy disk and click "Next." Restart your computer with the floppy disk still inserted. Your computer will boot directly to DriveScrubber. Press the down arrow on your keyboard to highlight the hard drive you want to format in the "Available Physical Drives" menu. Press the space bar to select the hard drive. Press "Enter" to continue. Press the down arrow to highlight "Seven Overwrites" in the "Available Data Wiping Methods" menu, and then press the space bar to select it. Press "Enter" to continue. Press "CTRL," "ALT," "Shift" and "W" at the same time to wipe the hard drive. Hope this helps.

My Dell computer was corrupted with a virus. and I went to f12 to re-install it. but it keep saying 'Boot device net available, I have a Dell XP 8400, can u help me? Will there be a charge?

Hi there.
Enter the bios setup menu and make sure in the Boot section under Hard Drive Priority, that the boot device is set FIRST in that area. Just make sure the hard drive that you need to boot from is set at the top of that list.
Let me know what happens.
Thank you!

My parents Dell Latitude D610 is returning the Internal HDD Hard Error. When I press F2 for the setup utility as it suggests, there is no option to enter safe mode. What should I do?

DELL Laptops usually have a bulit in self test.
You can enter it either by pressing F10 key at boot time and then go down to "Boot to utility partition" or "Hardware test".
If there is no such menu, you can still find your "Drivers and Utilites" disc. Put it in your optical drive and boot from it. You will be asked for starting tests by pressin Keys "1" or "2" or so. Once you booted into the main menu choose "Test System" and finally "Run tests". Optionally, you could specify the hardware part that you want to diag, but harddrives take most of the time, all other components are tested within a few seconds. Thus you can take the full diag as well.

XP wont boot and i cant boot from the restore disk. I get error code 1000-0146 when i run the DST Short test

That error code sounds like the Hard Drive is failing or has failed. Can you boot into Safe Mode? Hit F8 as you power up and choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt. If you can, enter chkdsk /r at a command prompt (the black window you'll see). You say you can't boot from the restore disk - why not? Are you booting to the green Dell Windows XP disc that shipped with the computer? Check the boot order in Setup (the BIOS) and make sure it looks to the CD drive first before trying to boot to the hard drive. SpinRite is a good utility for fixing these things, but not free, and involves booting to CD.
Hope this helps!

Blue Screen saying Unmountable_Boot_Problem I can't even restart in safe mode.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Almost always, your describe problem would indicate hard drive problem. This could either be:
  • corrupted files (least likely);
  • some bad sectors (likely);
  • faulty hard drive (most likely).

To check / verify, remove the hard drive, connect to an IDE / SATA to USB adapter and perform drive utilities on a 2nd computer.

Alternately, you could try formatting and reinstalling the Operating System. This of course would delete all the contents of the hard drive.

If you mean you need to install windows, you need to set your cdrom drive as first boot device in advanced bios settings or it will try to boot into a non-existent windows. Make sure your hdd is showing as the master drive, save settings and exit bios. Re-boot pc with windows disc in cd drive and hit enter when prompted to boot from cd.
