I thought I had tried holding the home and wake button at the same time, but I did not hold it for long enough! It took about 20 seconds and it started working just fine!

Same problem, thought my screen broke, thought I tried holding down both buttons and that hadn't worked, but holding them down longer as recommended here did the trick. Thanks!

  • fronthego Apr 04, 2009

Man, i had the same problem. I have no idea why it did it in the first place, but the fix you described worked thank you thank you thank you!!!!!

  • Anonymous Apr 05, 2009

I had the exact issue. Holding both buttons down corrected issue as of right now. Any idea as to why this happens?

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2009

I too had the black screen but the holding down both buttons for 20+ seconds worked, the apple icon appeared and seemed to stay on screen forever but all OK when it reloaded fully.

    Thanks for the tip.

  • Anonymous Apr 26, 2009

    same here
    exact problem
blank display but with audio sounds, incoming calls, etc.
holding down both buttons for extended period of time seemed to be the fix
    frustrating though...

  • hezzysicle Apr 28, 2009

My Apple iPhone screen has "blacked out". I can still hear sounds and it still rings and vibrates when someone calls me, but I can't see anything on the screen on the Home button doesn't work at all, and neither does the sleep button on top. I haven't dropped the phone or sat on it or gotten it wet, so I'm confused as to why it is acting like this.

  • hezzysicle Apr 28, 2009

Okay I fixed it by holding down the two buttons for about 10 seconds, and it came back on... I wonder why this would be happening though?

  • shelbza23 May 01, 2009

Omg mine is just a month old and has done this about 8 times or more

  • Anonymous May 07, 2009

my iphone just went blank, no errors or problems before hand just a blank screen but my alarm went off at normal time.

  • Anonymous May 20, 2009

My phone is completely black screen. I can still hear calls and texts and the screen is black. I pressed both buttons simultaneously and nothing happened, it is cracked and was working a few seconds before, but when i turned it back on it didnt turn on.

Have you dropped it or sat on it? If the screen is broken, then it might as well be 'bricked'...
If not, then I might have a solution.

Thanks to Raja! This was the perfect solution to my iPHONE SCREEN BLACK OUT problem.  It suddenly went dead and I thought I was on my way to the AT&T store when I read your post.  I held the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button simultaneously.  It took a good 15-20 seconds before the Apple logo appeared and the phone rebooted itself.  I am back in business!

Late reponse...
I noticed the same thing yesterday night with iPhone the first version. I was browsing the photos while my wife was using/talking to someone via the bluetooth connection. When she disconnected she noticed pitch black screen, did not response to any operation, but the phone seems to be working - I redialled through my bluetooth, mute worked, charging beeped etc. I was browsing through some other site for the issue and some posted that press and hold Sleep/Wake and Home buttons. It did not respond immediately but after a few seconds pressing Sleep/Wake showed some response, rebooted after that. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem..My display was fine when the screen was in the locked mode. When i slide to unlock the slide bar, the scrren used to become grey and the background black. It would remain like this.I could use the sleep/wake button to sleep .But when I unlock it, it would behave the same.I tried switching it off by keeping the sleep/wake button pressed for some time. But the iphone never switched off/reboot.I even tried leaving it unused for some 2 hrs hoping it would come back to its normal state. Finally I tried holding down the sleep/wake button and the home button simultaneously for some 20 seconds and finally it rebooted. Thanks for the solution. Was worried that I have to take it to the store..

Hi Guys,

Had the same problem for quite some time ! But I could see what was in the display by slanting the phone. So I navigated to the settings by looking at the display obliquely ( if thats a word) and choose Brightness --> Increased the brightness by dragging the bar --> Changed the Auto Brightness to OFF.

Steps

1. Slant the iPhone
2. Choose Settings
3. touch Brightness
4. Increase the brightness ( Now you must be able to see the display well)
5. Turn of Auto Brightness ( from ON --> OFF)

hth.

I'm having problems with mine as well...i can hear the ringtone when someone calls or texts, but there is nothing on the display but black. I have tried rebooting multiple times and still nothing. Is it possible for the LCD to go out? i took the phone apart to check if there was any possible water damage but there is none. Any ideas? im contemplating getting a new lcd screen and digitizer, will run about $50, but if anyone has a better idea please let me know!

I am that person who always breaks their phone. You'd think that I'd be more careful with an iphone, but no. Anyways, the blackout situation could be for one of two reasons. You may have a system failure or you may be in need for an iphone screen repair. Out of my three iphones I have had the blackout be for both issues. Efficient Repair Services

My iphone screen is black, no response from touchscreen or home or lock button. When you call the number there is no voulme but to the caller the phone is ringing. Any suggestions what the problem m

first thing I'd have you do is plug it in and see if you get a charging display on the screen. If you still don't see anything at all hold the home button and sleep/wake button for about 20 seconds. Many times this is all it takes. If it is just a software issue you should see the screen go white with a black apple. There was an issue with the 4 in the past (mine had this as well) where at 50% charge it locked completely. This did the trick. Let me know if this doesn't work and I'll give you some more possible steps. Where did you get the phone and what carrier?

Iphone touch screen is not working. Restored the phone from backup succesfully, but screen still doesn't work. Phone receives calls, etc., but can't unlock or answer calls because screen doesn't respond to...

Even though the iPhonemag-glass_10x10.gif is a device that is extremely convenient to have, it still can cause frustrations. Specifically, there may be times when the touch screen does not work properly.

There are various problems the iPhone touch screen could encounter. Although there are times when the screen does not work altogether, there are other situations when certain portions of the screen work and others don't. Of course, it is possible that the entire screen works, but is simply slow. Regardless of the exact problem, there are ways to troubleshoot the iPhone to diagnose the real problem.
  1. tep 1 Remove the wiping cloth that came in the small black envelope along with the iPhone. Wipe the smudges or dust off the screen with this cloth. It is best to wipe in a circular motion.
  2. Step 2 Do not put lotion on your hands and do not touch the screen if your hands are wet. Any kind of moisture can affect the way the touchscreen operates. Moisture sometimes slows the response time from the screen to the operating systemmag-glass_10x10.gif.
  3. Step 3 Check for a protective sheet on the screen. If there is some kind of a film or sheet on the touchscreen, the screen is likely not able to react to all of the sensitivities of the touch of a finger as it normally would.
  4. Step 4 If there is an application open and the touchscreen seems to not be working, simply close the application and retry it. A frozen application can usually be closed by pressing and holding on the circular button located just below the touchscreen.
  5. Step 5 Press and hold the home button as well as the reset button on the top of the phone to turn the iPhone off. A red slider will appear. Slide it to the right to turn the phone off. Press again on the "Reset" button on the top to turn the phone back on.
  6. Step 6 Completely reset the iPhone by holding the "Home" button and the "Reset" button for a full 10 seconds until the phone resets and the Apple logo appears on the phone.
    • If you are using the iPhone in cold weather and wearing gloves, the iPhone will not react to the gloves as it will to the touch of a finger.
    • If the touchscreen is dirty, do not run the iPhone under water. Doing this will likely ruin the phone, but even if it doesn't, it will possibly make the phone run slower.

There might be a Flex cable that disconnected in the phone, you will need to bring it to a cell phone shop or apple to have a look at it.

Iphone touchscreen not working:(

I think my solution for my Viewty will work for the iPhone

I found a solution for the LG KU990 Viewty touchscreen not responding problem. After thinking about twisting my phone, I came up with another solution which actually works every time. The touchscreen works via layers of plastic that when contact is made, a signal is triggered from the coordinates of the contact. However, when the phone has pressure, these layers of plastic stick together somehow. So, to fix it.... Get a small strip of adhesive tape that will not leave a sticky residue on your screen. Apply that tape in several spots on the surface of the screen, and lift it away from the phone with light pressure. Repeat this in several areas of the screen. That's it. You're done. Your screen should function properly. Simply recalibrate the touchscreen at this point in your settings menu. I hope it helps everyone with any type of touchscreen. I know it helped me. The touchscreen phones are totally useless using only the hard keys!

Touchscreen not working:(

Ahh i think i had something similar to this.. what i did may work for you is, putting the phone in bootloader mode, hold power button + home button for like 10seconds.. This should get you to a screen where it will ask you to connect to iTunes and restore.

So plug it in, iTunes should recognise it and then you should be able to restore it.

Hope it helps
