Emachine flashing yellow lights, fans power up when P8 is unplugged

I was given an Emachine T2542 that went out. It won't power up and flashes yellow around the power button and the other light on the front but no fans. I unplugged everything from the power supply and individually started plugging them back in starting with the P1 (motherboard). This allowed the fans to start up. Once I got to the P8 (4 prong that attaches to the motherboard) the fans stopped. I'm not sure what this is for. I was told that the flashing lights could either be the power supply, power button or motherboard. I tried installing a new power supply but it did nothing at all, even when I plugged them in one at a time. The fan started when we did the paperclip test in 14 and 15 of the motherboard connection so it apparently works. What do you think it could be?

Thanks for the info. The old 250 power supply worked with it for 5 years and just went out so it was powerfull. The fans both turn on when I plug in the 20 pin to the motherboard. When I plug in the 4 pin CPU power connector, the cpu fan shuts off but the power supply stays on. There is no on/off switch on the old PSU. The new PSU is a 350 and it will not power up anything. Nothing works, not even the lights. I went through everything with a tech and we narrowed it down to the motherboard. I will be switching it out with a better one with a better CPU but $65 on Newegg.

This T2542 emachine power problems: replaced motor , and when turned on fan went on for 5 seconds and all turned off again. flashed green then yellow initially but shut down. I am new to these older machines but need to see a diagram of how to start unplugging what to track down the problem.

I would also suggest that the battery in the motherboard be replaced. That battery is startup power for the computer and if the battery is dead you will have the same symptems of startup power problems!!!The battery you will be looking at looks like a large watch batteryand is flat slide the old one out and replace it with a new one and it should solve your issues!!!

Did some research and found this site which will tell you which pins to test. It is possible also that its not powerful enough for the devices you have. I would try again only giving power to the motherboard pins, of coarse and the hard drive. If works then plug one device at a time.
Good luck

Please be careful when installing a new power supply. System must be off and unplugged. Insert 20-24 pin on mother board then 4 pin plug on mother board first followed by drives and cards. DO NOT disconnect any power plugs or devices or device plugs when computer is powered up.

You must turn off system each time your disconnect a device or plug from the mother board as well as power off when connecting new devices.

Connecting the 20-24 pin and powering up without the 4 pin connected to mb can cause serious problems. Both must be plugged in before switching on power.

I have a emachine that powers ou, power pack fan, cpu fan but not the hardrive. It shut down and now won't start up. No beeps

Unplug from AC, open the case, clean if necessary, reseat the memory mods, use Electronic Contact Cleaner spray on contacts, plug in, push the on/off button. Does it begin to start, and in a few seconds completly shuts down? No LED's , no fans, nothing? Sounds like a PSU failure. Mine went out in 6 years.

Emachine t2542

When you say out, do you mean they are broken, or just disconnected? Most of these computers have a plug on the end of the wires to the front panel and it just plugs into the system board. If you look at the board you'll see where the front panel wires go. Sometimes it's hard to read the small type, but there are labels on the board that tell you what connector does what.

T2542 Emachine

It's hard to troubleshoot a power supply. They are very dangerous and contain electricity for some time after turned off. If your new one isn't solving your problem it makes me think it's not the power supply unless it's not powerful enough. Try this:
Open your case having your "CPU & HEATSINK" in sight. You can lay your case on its side if its easier to see this. Power up watching only the cpu fan located on or in the attached device over your processor (cpu). If it doesn't turn then that is likely your problem. CPU is overheating which automatically shuts down system. Pls. make sure both 20-24 pin and 4 pin plugs from power supply are tightly plugged in mother board before you start.
If it is working try another power outlet in your house. Sounds odd but is a known issue.
Could be a few more things but these are most common.
Let me know pls. your results.

Emachine shut down

No, it's just the USB ports that are still being powered.
Totally normal in most new computers. Same thing with the PS2 ports.
There are jumpers on the motherboard that can change this if you really want. It's designed like that to keep things like you have powered for when you do turn it on and need them.

Pover up trouble

sounds like something is drawing down on your 12 volt supply drives or on board regulators. Try it without the drives connectged, and see if you can get the system to boot up(you'll just get a notice that your drives are unavailable, but you'll already know that, right?

got backup for your Dell?

There might be a problem with your mother board, or processor, or both of them.
