Turn the laptop off. When you turn on the laptop, hit the F8 key repeatedly. This should get you a menu which will give you options to different start modes including Last Known good configuration, Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

You can first try Last Known good configuration and see if you laptop will start propertly this way.

If that does not work, you will want to try starting in Safe Mode. In Safe Mode you can try to use Windows System Restore. You find system restore in the Help and Support menu in the start menu. You can try to restore to a date before you started having the problem.

I hope that his is helpful.

This means that your hard drive has failed -- it is no longer imminent.
Every time that you allow it to try to boot from now on you're allowing the drive to eat itself up more and more. If you want to have a hard drive recovery service be able to get anything off of it, stop trying to boot from it any more.
Take the computer in to a service center and have them replace the drive and re-install the operating system. Hopefully you have a backup of your data, because otherwise you've probably lost it all.

SMART is used to measure your HDD health. It warns you of impending failure of your hard drive. If it goes down, it's a good idea to backup important stuff and prepare to replace the HDD.

S.M.A.R.T is an acronym for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology systems (SMART) and it's usually built in to most modern ATA and SCSI hard disks.

So, my laptop - (Sony Vaio VGN-CR220E) has crashed twice before... I just found the Repair Disks, but I'm not quite sure what to do. I put the first disk in, and it loads up to a screen SMART Failure...

Have you ever heard of TDL4 malware? It actually writes a new partition with oddball parameters such that most antivirus and anti-malware products cannot find the infection. But often the new partition overlaps previous partitions, making the internal "not-so-SMART" routines suspect that the hard drive is failing. It usually is not true! But there are only a scant few utilities that even detect TDL4, or any of it's variations. Good Luck!

I have a imminent failure and when I press F1 then I start installing Windows the system doesn't detect my HDD. I have a bad sectors and I know it. But I can't solve it. Can you tell me more information...

The motherboard is quering the 'S.M.A.R.T.' status of the disk-drive,
and the disk-drive is reporting that it is about to "fail".
So, your motherboard is showing that "Imminent failure -- press F1 to ignore this alert" message.

Take your computer to a qualified technician, to see if it is "too late" to recover any files from your disk-drive, and/or to install a new disk-drive, and to install Windows.

Acer Aspire 5100: SMART Failure on Hard Disk 4

Hello there,

As per experience, SMART Utility will check your HDD for any errors that may occur.

I backed up everything and replaced a new HDD and got rid of the error.

Opened up the problematic HDD and noticed a very light scratch on its "platters".

As for me. Never ignore this warning before something might happen to your HDD and lost important data.

Failure is imminent

Bad sectors on a hard disk is an every day thing, the hard drive keeps a bunch of spare sectors and a table to reroute bad sectors to the backups. This warning basically means that you are out of backups, and now you may start losing real data if you do not change the hard disk.
