Sony Receiver Str-av370 ... The red "P"

Hello,

I'm begging you to help me with this strange "P" flashing that freezes the receiver. Then, when i turn it off, the surround light is flashing again with a click kinda noise. Thanks!!

I have the same receiver and i also have the same problem,
this happens when i turn the volume or the bass too loud.

it suddenly clicks and the sound cuts off. then the flashing red P appears.

My solution: As soon as it happens, quickly press the power button twice (turn off, turn back on)
and turn the volume knob all the way down. wait 2-3 seconds and it will click back to normal.

If you take too long before turning off the receiver when the P appears it will not work.
In this case you have to unplug the power cord and let it rest for at least 20 mins then plug it back in.

hope this helps!
ps: I've been using this receiver for mure than 8 years so i'm quite used to it!

Thanks Darkstarr ... my sister just phoned me with that problem, she pushed every possible button and it was still frozen with the "P" and the same clicking noise when switched off (but still plugged in) that 'philclab' described. So I googled, we tried your solution, and it worked. We turned the volume way down first, then clicked it Off/On quickly, and first time it didn't work, second time it did. Funny, we had tried unplugging for 10 minutes, but the Vol was at about 1/4, you'd think that would be okay, but evidently as you pointed out it is important to have the Vol turned way down. THANKS!

You need:
a phillips head screwdriver

unplug unit and discharge any static electricity.
remove the metal grill/cover to expose the internals.
there's a cord that is connected to the LED display with a screw, tighten said screw.

this should fix your problem

I have the same model and had the identical problem. If you can take it to an audio tech it is a simple fix...there is a bad solder joint/joints that is causing the unit to go in to protection mode. He just had to reflow the solder on the offending part/parts. If you like the receiver, the fix may be worth it....mine was well under a hundred bucks. Hope this helps!

Protect typically means that the fuse blew because something in your receiver went bad. It's now protecting your speakers from that badness. You need to get the receiver fixed or replaced.

Sony Model: STR-DG800

You've got a short in one of your speaker wires either at the receiver (most common) or at the speaker itself. you should only have a 1/2" of each side of the speaker wire stripped to put on each terminal, and when you strip them, twist them so there are no frays in the strands that will touch the other terminal. The receiver is protecting itself from harm. Turn it off then disconnect all speaker wires, examine each wire carefully before reinstalling, then turn the receiver back on. If it still says protection, look at each speaker and reconnect your wires the same way. If you still have a problem, disconnect the wires again at the receiver and turn on, at this point, if it say's protection, it needs to be serviced. Hope this helps
