Question about Gateway GT4022 PC Desktop

GT4022 won't boot...

I have searched and found two people with similiar problems to mine. The computer just won't boot up. It's getting power, I can hear the HD start working, and the power supply is not the issue as I tried a different one and that one didn't work either. As soon as I plug the power cable into the back of the machine, it starts powering up without me even hitting the power button. No signal is sent to the monitor, and the computer does get as loud as it does when it normally starts up. I'm thinking this is a motherboard problem.

If indeed it is a motherboard problem, do I have to get another Gateway motherboard, or can I replace it with a any brand I want?

Got the same problem. I tried using a post code diagnostic card, didn't get any codes at all. I have read in several forums that the motherboards ( Fic KTBC51G LF) in these computers don't last but about 1 year. I am trying to find a replacement board because I don't want to buy another one that is going out in a years time. Does anyone know a replacement board for this computer?

My computer fan starts it has power. No signal on screen showing. When I called Microsoft they said it was the graphics design card that connection from my minitor to the back of my computer that needed to be replaced. The purple usb cable that attaches to the card reader make sence to anyone out there.

Wow! Where to begin. I acquired my daughter's Gateway GT4022. It quite working and she took it too Circuit City to have it looked at and the Tech. said that a virus wiped out the BIOS and the mother board needed to be replaced at $400. After doing some research on the motherboard I found somewhere that it was for a BTX case. Tech that I talked to had never heard of a BTX. After looking carefully inside the GT 4022 he said good luck finding a mother board that fits in the case. The motherboard is mirrored (meaning that it is mounted on the opposite side of the case) and that he had never seen one like this before. He has the computer in his shop now but he said it doesn't look promising. He said best bet would be new case and motherboard (that is if the socket 939 CPU is still good) at about $100 plus labor.

I had the same problem. I took it to get worked on by a local computer repair shop and was told it was the motherboard. This was JUST over a year after I bought it and of course it was just a year warranty, not a year and two weeks. No exeptions said gateway. So I had a new one put in,157 for the board, 90 day warranty ONLY! Guess what? A year later, exact same thing. Reluctantly I had them replace it again. This time 170 for board 90 day warranty. So if it happens again I'll throw it on the ground and run over it a dozen times and then throw it in the river. I'll buy a Dell. Hope this helps!

Well, I think gateway is just a computer manufacturer, so if you are still under warranty, you could possibly get a replacement. But before doing anything, and if you are comfortable with doing so, open up the side of the casing, and take a look around, see if any cables seem unconnected.

You may have a virus, malware, adware, a browser hijacker, or pups (potentially unwanted programs).

A. If your computer will boot and you can operate it ok...

Download and install Malwarebytes and Superantispyware (Note: If you can\'t do the download on your machine, do it on a friend\'s, put them on a thumb drive, and install them from it). Then scan your computer with each program, and quarantine anything found.

B. If your computer won\'t boot, or can\'t operate properly after boot...

Tap F8 when you are booting, select "Safe Mode With Networking". Download and install Malwarebytes and Superantispyware (Note: If you can\'t do the download on your machine, do it on a friend\'s, put them on a thumb drive, and install them from it). Then scan your computer with each program, and quarantine anything found.

C. If this process finds malware, to keep stuff like that from coming back, I recommend you get the paid version of Malwarebytes.

Good luck

Gateway GM5472 won't boot no power

No power and won't boot suggest a power supply problem in the tower--it is listed as a desktop unit.

What is common on a lot of units (computer towers, TV sets, you name it) is the stand by power supply which is on 7/24 fails.

The most common reason is filter caps dry out because cheap ones and ones rated too low a voltage are used.

The beauty of this is if the power supply is removed and opened you will be able to SEE the bad ones.

I will attach a photo of bad caps--tops which should be perfectly flat are puffed up from a little to a lot and or brown material is seen at top and bottom of the cap.

I have fixed many towers (desktop units) and other equipment with this problem---most of them at first had to be turned on a few times to get them to come on--it gradually gets worse until it will not make it on.

If bad caps are found you can usually buy a replacement supply at a reasonable price or replace the puffed up caps (seen as many as 8 bad in one computer tower).

This answer is based on the information you provided in your question and the answer from personal experience.

The screen goes fuzzy because the video chip has failed. Since this is an onboard one you will have to replace either the motherboard or the entire pc if you don't know how to do that .

Probably hardware failure. To test that remove all disks and extra components and try again to boot into BIOS. If you can't then you will know for sure. If you can then take the opportunity to change the boot order and put the cd first and the hd second. Now connect an optical unit and try to boot in a bootable disk, preferably a Linux Live-CD. If you can then the hard disk is dead, replace it.

Try a different monitor (borrow one). If that doesn't work, you need to take it to the shop.

Gateway GT4022 Motherboard Failure

The capacitors in the onboard power supplies fail. There are usually visible signs in the form of the ends of the caps being swelled up. Happens to monitors too, and not just the Gateway brand is affected. It's not bad design, but the capacitor makers made a batch (and it's a big batch!) of parts with bad chemistry, and sold them to lots of manufacturers. Replacing the caps fixes the problems, but the work involves good soldering skills. Yeah, you can go buy another brand, but given what I just shared with you, you may find problems again. Even the replacement parts can go bad. Regarding your class action idea, yeah you can sue anybody for anything these days but bear in mind: the manufacturer's warranty sets the terms, and you agreed to those terms when you bought the product. The warranty is a legal and binding contract both ways. And if it has expired, it has expired. The only exception may be specific state laws that mandate rights or extensions not specified in the warranty contract. Your class-action is then limited to owners within that state's jurisdiction.
