Download and install the Chipset driver.

The Northbridge chip handles the faster capabilities of a computer.
Processor, Ram Memory, and High-speed graphics.

A graphics card inserted into a PCI slot, and Integrated Graphics, is NOT high-speed graphics }
The Southbridge chip handles the slower capabilities of a computer.
Anything connected to the PCI bus, or IDE, or SATA, or USB, or Ethernet, or Audio (Sound)

The Chipset Driver listed on the Acer Support driver download page, for the Aspire 5100 Notebook PC, refers to the Motherboard Chipset.

You will see there are two Chipset Drivers listed.
The top file is for Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE)
The bottom file is for Windows XP Pro
Click on the appropriate file's Download icon at the right.

A small window will come up on the right,
Opening Chipset_ATI_8.251_MCE.zip
is for Windows XP Media Center Edition
Opening Chipset_ATI_8.251.060427_XPx86.zip
is for Windows XP Pro
There is a small circle to the left of Save File.
If it does Not have a green dot in it, click in the circle.
Now go to the bottom, and click on OK.
{ This is a Zip file. A Zip file, for one, is used to send a large amount of information.
It is a condensed file, and needs to be 'unzipped'. }
After you click on OK another small window will come up.
In the wording at the top of this window, tells you where the file will download to.
You may wish to write it down.
{You have now downloaded the driver file. It needs to now be unzipped, then installed}
It may have Desktop, or My Documents, or Downloads, in the wording.
(This applies to WinXP.
Vista and Win7 are different.
Desktop, Documents, Downloads)
Desktop:
The file will be on your desktop screen
My Documents:
Click on Start, then on My Documents.
Downloads:
Click on Start, then on My Documents. DOUBLE-click on Downloads.
When you see the driver file, DOUBLE-click on it.
Your unzip program may come up with a window that has unzip listed to the right, and on top.
If so click on unzip.
To the far left side, and at the top will be - Extract All Files. Click on it.
Your unzip program may not have the above. It may come up, and on the far left have Extract All Files. Same procedure. Click on Extract All Files.
The Installation Wizard will come up.
On the next three small windows click on Next, Next, and Finish, at the bottom.
If you are not asked to restart your computer, close all windows, go back to your desktop screen.
Click on Restart.
(Start > Turn Off Computer > Restart )
IF, this PCI device is more specifically towards Graphics, download, and install the appropriate graphics driver.
(The Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook PC uses an ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 motherboard chipset.
