Dial-up Internet connection problem

I recently bought a laptop but am unable to connect to the Internet thru the dial up modem. I also can't connect to AOL. I click on the AOL icon but the logon prompt page doesn't come up.

I purchased laptop online at Best Buy(Gateway P-6860FX). Checked modem and it has Agere Systems HDA modem which the computer says works fine. I'm guessing that it has something to do with my AOL access. Whenever I click on the AOL icon it appears to load but doesn't bring up a login window. AOL is how I connect to the internet on my desktop comp. I've tried reloading AOL but getting same results.

What model do you have. Perhaps whomever you purchased it from left the modem card out of it not knowing you would need it. There are 56k modem cards avail. that stick out of the PCMCIA slot. It is always an option. You can get them for like $5 on ebay.

Will let me get in to the internet with out the wireless network.

Your laptop should have an ethernet port on your laptop. If you can plug your laptop with a Cat5 network cable and plug that cable into your internet source you should be able to connect to the internet.

Your internet source could be your modem or router. If you have dial-up, you would have to check to see if your netbook has a dial-up modem built into it.

If you do not have these available and no wireless available, you will be unable to connect to the internet.

Does my new Emachine laptop have no dial up modem?

Correct. It's looking for a standard dialer modem. You may just need to go through the internet connection wizard and define how you want to connect. With a wireless adapter, you could locate and connect to internet with that instead of a dial-up modem. Internet connetion wizard comes with Vista and XP and is found: Start > Control Panel > Network connections.

I have recently bought a Belkin Wireless Router and I am unable to connect to the Internet on my laptop. What do I need to do to connect my laptop to the internet using the Belkin Wireless router?

your Internet modem or router needs to be connected to the Belkin router's WAN port with an ethernet cable. You'll then need to configure the belkin's wireless settings, it's usually a very easy "follow the prompts" kind of setup.

if you are using dial up, you shud not have a modem.. modem is just for DSL connection
if you have a modem probably you are using a DSL connection

DEFINITION:
